Remembertobreathe figures a shorter price in feature
Remembertobreathe was a huge overlay when he paid $44.80 for his win in a one-mile, open allowance race on the Longacres Mile card Aug. 14 at Emerald Downs. He figures to be a much shorter price in a $25,000 claiming race for 3-year-olds and up Saturday at Emerald. The one-mile race drew eight horses and headlines a nine-race card that begins at 2 p.m. Pacific.
Based at Hastings with trainer Sylvea Gregory, Remembertobreathe was good enough to finish second in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby in 2014 at Northlands Park, and he was coming off a couple of solid efforts in Vancouver prior to his latest win. The horse who beat him by a nose in a $35,000 optional claimer July 9 at Hastings, Calgary Caper, earned a 90 Beyer Speed Figure when he won the $75,000 Pacific Customs Brokers Classic in his next start.
Remembertobreathe’s win price also was surprising because he had shown an affinity for the Emerald surface, with a win and two runner-up finishes in five starts over the one-mile oval last year.
In his latest win, he rallied into a moderate pace with Amadeo Perez aboard. He drew post 4 and should get a similar trip with Perez retaining the mount Saturday.
KEY CONTENDERS
Remembertobreathe, by D’wildcat
Last 3 Beyers: 81-71-79
◗ He has an excellent 2-2-0 record from four starts at the distance, and the only times he wasn’t part of the exacta in six starts at Emerald were in the $50,000 Mount Rainier, won by two-time Grade 3 Longacres Mile winner Stryker Phd, and when he ran over a wet track going six furlongs in a $40,000 optional claimer.
Mike Man’s Gold, by Liberty Gold
Last 3 Beyers: 79-78-82
◗ Trained by Joe Toye, he set the pace and held on to finish third when favored in Remembertobeathe’s win Aug. 14. He can stalk, though, and could get a nice trip sitting just off Party Pooper, who could be the one they have to catch.
Its Allabout Jerry, by Grindstone
Last 3 Beyers: 70-90-76
◗ He didn’t fire in the Remembertobreathe race, but he may have bounced after earning a career-best 90 Beyer for finishing third in the Mount Rainier in his previous start.
◗ The 4-year-old Oregon-bred trained by Rigoberto Velasquez also has a solid 2-1-0 record from five starts going a mile.
Fire the Trainer, by Majestic Warrior
Last 3 Beyers: 78-75-63
◗ Trained by Jeff Metz, he is trending in the right direction, with back-to-back wins in conditioned-claiming sprints. He should get a nice trip from a forward position.
