For the second consecutive year, a New York invader spoiled Chub Wagon’s party in the Dr. Teresa Garofalo Memorial for fillies and mares at Parx Racing. Last year, it was Todd Pletcher’s Don’t Call Me Mary who shipped down from Saratoga to upend the popular Mid-Atlantic based sprinter. In 2022, it was Remain Anonymous who stormed down the center of the track under Irad Ortiz Jr. for trainer Robert Falcone Jr. The Garofalo Memorial was one of seven $100,000 stakes for registered Pennsylvania-breds on Monday’s program, with the Mrs. Penny for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles, the Marshall Jenney for 3-year-olds and up at five furlongs, the Miss Blue Tye Dye for 2-year-olds fillies at 5 1/2 furlongs, the Whistle Pig for 2-year-olds at 5 1/2 furlongs, the Banjo Picker Sprint for 3-year-olds and up at six furlongs, and the Storm Cat for 3-year-olds and up at a mile and 70 yards. Both the Mrs. Penny and Marshall Jenney were moved from turf to dirt due to overnight rain. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match and FREE Formulator PPs! Join DRF Bets. Remain Anonymous entered the Garofalo Memorial in sharp form after capturing a $32,000 claiming race July 15 at Saratoga with a career-best 94 Beyer Speed Figure. She was claimed from the Brad Cox barn that afternoon by Falcone and owner Sanford J. Goldfarb. Remain Anonymous won that race on the front end but couldn’t get anywhere near Monday’s hot early fractions set by Hey Mamaluke and Disco Ebo. Those two brawled through splits of 21.60 seconds and 45.31, with Chub Wagon a wide fifth and Remain Anonymous ever farther behind after the opening quarter-mile. Oxana and Cinnabunny ranged up to join the pacesetters with two furlongs remaining, and Chub Wagon was caught in behind those four. She checked slightly while looking for a seam as Remain Anonymous avoided the traffic jam with a strong five-wide bid. Remain Anonymous had all the momentum and blew past the tired leaders in upper stretch to win by 5 3/4 lengths. She completed the six furlongs over the fast track in 1:10.93 and returned $9 to win as the second choice in the betting. Chub Wagon, 3-5 on the tote, got clear at the three-sixteenths and finished well for second, although it’s very debatable whether she would have beaten Remain Anonymous with a clear trip. Oxana was 1 1/4 lengths behind Chub Wagon in third. Then came Cinnabunny, Precious, Excitable Lady, Hey Mamaluke, and Disco Ebo. Empress Deona scratched. Stakes-placed at Presque Isle Downs in 2020 when trained by Michael Trombetta, Remain Anonymous placed in 5 of 6 starts earlier this year for Wayne Catalano before being claimed for $40,000 by Cox on June 9 at Churchill Downs. Bred by Horseshoe Valley Equine Center, Remain Anonymous is a 5-year-old mare by Tapiture. She has won 5 of 22 starts for lifetime earnings of $305,315. Chub Wagon made her initial start for Regina Brennan after winning 12 of 13 for Guadalupe Preciado. Preciado told Daily Racing Form last week that a dispute regarding the mare’s racing schedule was the reason for the trainer change. Neither Brennan nor Chub Wagon’s owners, Daniel Lopez, and George Chestnut, could be reached for comment. Mrs. Penny Although Love in the Air was Grade 3-placed on turf last month, trainer John Servis told Daily Racing Form late last week that he hoped the filly would get an opportunity on dirt. “To be honest with you, I’m hoping we get rain,” Servis said. “I think she’s just as good on the dirt.” It poured on Sunday night, and Servis got his wish when the Mrs. Penny was moved to the main track. Of course, Love in the Air still had to do her part. She did so in commanding fashion, taking seven other fillies and mares on a merry chase around the track from her inside post position. Jockey Paco Lopez nursed Love in the Air through fractions of 24.03 and 48.74 while prompted by My Dixie Lass, tucked that one into bed on the second turn, and drew away to win by six lengths in 1:47.29. Stablemate Midnight Obsession was second, a nose better than Ninetypercentbrynn. Then came Eight Danzas, My Dixie Lass, Cuenca, Misquillo, and Gold Rush Kitten. Love in the Air paid $3 as the overwhelming favorite. A daughter of Constitution bred by Blackstone Farm and owned by Main Line Racing Stable, Love in the Air notched her first stakes victory. Marshall Jenney If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Smooth B took that old saying to heart. The veteran son of Weigelia finished third in the 2019 Marshall Jenney Handicap, then ran second the last two years before breaking through with a game effort Monday for trainer Butch Reid and jockey Frankie Pennington. For the second consecutive year, the Marshall Jenney was moved from turf to dirt due to excess rain. That certainly helped Smooth B’s chances as the 7-year-old is 0 for 11 on grass. Still, Smooth B had to upend a strong rival in 4-5 favorite Admiral Abe, who went gate to wire to beat Smooth B in the 2021 Marshall Jenney. Admiral Abe went right to the front and eventually cleared to the inside, with both Button Box and Smooth B on a hard chase through an opening quarter of 22.06. Admiral Abe remained the leader at the three-sixteenth pole and looked quite good, but Smooth B refused to quit. Smooth B. dropped his head, went after Admiral Abe, and forged on by to prevail by 3 1/4 lengths in 57.71. He returned $4.20 to win. With the victory, Smooth B pushed his record to 9 wins from 45 starts with lifetime earnings of $641.558. Miss Blue Tye Dye Preciado doesn’t train Chub Wagon any longer, but he has another fleet filly in 2-year-old Flor de Sombra, who was simply too fast for her opposition in the Miss Blue Tye Dye. A homebred owned by Joseph Imbesi, Flor de Sombra zoomed to an uncontested lead after a quarter in 22.33, ran up the margin to seven lengths after a half-mile clocking of 46.22, then held sway by two lengths over first-time starter Marion Grace. It was another 7 1/4 lengths back to Ice in third. Flor de Sombra stepped 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:06.31 and returned $2.40 as the heavy favorite.  The Miss Blue Tye Dye was almost a carbon copy of Flor de Sombra’s career debut last month in a statebred maiden special weight going 5 1/2 furlongs at Parx. In that race, Flor de Sombra was four lengths clear after a half-mile, then bounced home to score by 7 3/4 lengths with a 67 Beyer. She paid $21.20 that day. Flor de Sombra is by Social Inclusion out of a half-sister to multiple stakes winners Buy Land and See and Sweet Bye and Bye. She was the second 2-year-old Imbesi homebred to win on the Monday card for Preciado. Gordian Knot, a gelding, won his career debut in the second race, completing 5 1/2 furlongs in that statebred maiden special weight in 1:05.51. Whistle Pig Not to be outdone by Preciado, Reid sent out Ninetyprcentmaddie to grab the Whistle Pig in his second lifetime appearance. A 2-year-old son of Weigelia owned and bred by LC Racing, Ninetyprcentmaddie was ridden aggressively by Pennington to obtain forward position. The colt raced on the lead while three wide and was pressured by inner rivals A Western Yarn and Deacon Dougie through an opening quarter of 22.57. Ninetyprcentmaddie had enough of her pace pursuers’ impertinence, dusted them away on the turn, then held 57-1 longshot Keithsendshelloooo at bay despite failing to change leads in the stretch. Upstate and Back was another 10 lengths behind in third. Ninetyprcentmaddie ran 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:05.61, returned $4.60 as the race favorite, and was Reid’s third winner on the card. Ninetyprcentmaddie won his debut from off the pace against open company July 9 at Parx. Banjo Picker Reid’s quest for a four-bagger on the card came up four lengths short as Beren was defeated by Fortheluvofbourbon in the Banjo Picker Sprint. Longshots Thiscatcanjump and Jw’s Third Mischie contested fractions of 22.23 and 45.37, with Fortheluvofbourbon sitting in a lovely spot behind them in third. Fortheluvofbourbon made a three-wide sweep to the lead under Paco Lopez and drew off on his left lead to win in 1:10.53. He returned $5 as the second choice. Beren was somewhat unlucky. Forced to play catchup after being bumped soundly at the start, he then wound up behind the tiring pacesetters after dropping down to the rail entering the turn. Beren split rivals three wide into the lane and got up for second, a half-length ahead of Breezy Gust. Trained by Michael Pino, Fortheluvofbourbon earned his fourth consecutive victory and has now won five of his last six starts. Overall, he has 10 wins from 21 starts for lifetime earnings of $406,520. A 5-year-old gelding by Bourbon Courage, Fortheluvofbourbon was claimed by Pino for $50,000 out of a fourth-place finish at Churchill Downs on May 29, 2020. The Banjo Picker was his second stakes victory. He beat Beren by a neck in Parx’s Page McKenney Handicap on April 25. Storm Cat Pletcher didn’t have a runner in the Garofalo Memorial, but that didn’t stop him from making his presence felt on the program. Not only did he send out juvenile debut winner Game Seven for a partnership that includes Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, but Pletcher’s Too Boss didn’t disappoint the chalkplayers in the Storm Cat. Too Boss was four wide and in between runners as they stacked seven across the track heading into the first turn. Jockey Kendrick Carmouche wisely wanted no part of that traffic-filled battle and rated Too Boss into a midpack position as Ruby Bleu set fractions of 23.23, 47.36, and 1:12.55 while pushed by Wait for It. Carmouche kept Too Boss four paths off the rail, and they grinded their way to the lead in midstretch. The El Padrino colt asserted his class thereafter and finished 1 3/4 lengths ahead of rallying Far Mo Power after a mile and 70 yards in 1:43.65. Ruby Bleu held on for third. Too Boss returned $4.40 as the race favorite. A 4-year-old homebred owned by Michael Joseph Cascio, Too Boss placed third in the Grade 3 Bay Shore Stakes last year at Aqueduct. He entered the Storm Cat following a 92-Beyer victory in an allowance race June 20 at Parx and has now won four times from 11 starts for earnings of $249,200.
