Relentless Cowboy looks ready to fire off layoff

A former maiden claimer, Relentless Cowboy was a success story at Prairie Meadows last summer, winning the $179,900 Iowa Double Gold Futurity at 350 yards in a 22-1 upset.

That was the highlight, and only victory, of a five-race campaign in 2019 that included a nose loss in a $20,000 claimer for maidens at Remington Park last May.

Saturday, Relentless Cowboy will have his first start since late September in an allowance race for nonwinners of two at 250 yards at Remington Park. There is every indication the gelding will be ready for his return.

Trained by Stacy Charette-Hill, Relentless Cowboy has had two 220-yard workouts since the beginning of March and is the most accomplished of the 10 runners in the field.

The allowance race is the eighth race on a 10-race program that begins at 6 p.m. Central. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.

In such a short race, a clean start is vital for Relentless Cowboy. He used a good break to win the Iowa Double Gold Futurity. This will be Relentless Cowboy’s first start since a third in a division of the Valley Junction Futurity at Prairie Meadows last September when he finished a length behind Southard Queen, who later won the $219,894 final.

Undrafted, seventh in the Valley Junction, drew the outside post in Saturday’s allowance race. Six of the 10 runners are having their first start of the year.

MH Might B Leavin, who breaks from post 9, was second in a 300-yard allowance race March 12 in his first start of 2020. Trained by Eddie Willis, MH Might B Leavin could go favored. He was third in the FL Lady Bug Stakes for Oklahoma-breds at 330 yards at Remington Park last May.

Saturday’s program concludes with a 300-yard maiden race for 2-year-olds with 10 first-time starters. There will be support for High Plains Secret, a gelding by Hez Our Secret who is out of Miss Racy Jess, winner of the $935,350 Los Alamitos Super Derby in 2011.

High Plains Secret, trained by Heath Taylor, was purchased for $25,000 last September at the Heritage Place yearling sale in Oklahoma City.

After Saturday’s program, racing resumes at Remington Park on Thursday, April 16. There is no racing this Sunday on Easter.
