Trainer Butch Reid is bringing a small cavalry to Parx Racing for a pair of statebred stakes on Sunday. Ninetyprcentmaddie, a 5-year-old gelding, could lead the charge in the $100,000 Page McKenney, his first start in Pennsylvania-bred company since August. “Maddie’s doing really well,” Reid said. “We gave him a nice long break this winter and it really did him a lot of good. He’s training very forwardly. This race might be a little under his best distance, but this is a spot we couldn’t pass on.” Run in April at seven furlongs for the last three years, the 2025 running of the Page McKenney in June has been shortened to six furlongs. Despite the changes, the race has attracted a similar field to those assembled in prior years. Reid also entered 10-year-old horse Smooth B in the Page McKenney, but he cross-entered him in $100,000 Get Serious at Monmouth Park Sunday and may bring him there instead. If his stablemate travels to New Jersey, Ninetyprcentmaddie will stand alone in a shortened field of nine. The gelding may be nursing a losing streak going back to November 2023, but his 2024 campaign was arguably the strongest of his career. Between May and July 2024, he appeared to be a moony outsider against graded stakes company in New York but finished in the money in three straight starts. His last five starts against open company at Parx were not as sharp, but he still held his own in stakes and stakes-quality allowances. After a third-place finish in a $55,000 allowance last month, he will run at six furlongs again in his second start back from a winter layoff. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Michael Moore is bringing Twisted Ride, third-place finisher in the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt last year, and One More Scoop, a 6-year-old gelding he claimed for $100,000 last month. It will be Twisted Ride’s first start since tailing off in the fall last year. Recent victories seem to be at a premium in this classy field, making 4-year-old gelding Harp’s Hot Corner dangerous for trainer Jamie Ness. Before shipping to Delaware as a beaten favorite last time out, he won eight of his last nine starts while rising through the ranks at Parx. Unique Bella Stakes Reid didn’t quite manage to circle the field in the Page McKenney, but he’ll get a lot closer in the $100,000 Unique Bella Stakes earlier on the Sunday card at Parx Racing. The trainer has three of the six statebred runners entered. Carmelina, the 8-5 morning line favorite, is undefeated in two career starts at Parx that were separated by almost two years. After winning a maiden race there in June 2023, the filly spent nearly two years on tour, winning four stakes. In her 4-year-old debut last month, she finally returned home and won a $55,000 allowance in highly professional fashion, earning a career-high 88 Beyer Speed Figure. “She’s always been a very nice filly, but it looks like this year, she’s moved to a new level,” Reid said. “That race off the layoff was really something special.” A stalking type in her recent starts, Carmelina will most likely sit behind her front-running stablemate, Disco Ebo, in the early going. The 6-year-old mare won the $100,000 Primonetta on the lead at Laurel Park in April. It could be even easier for her to get comfortable in this field. If Reid’s other contenders fail, he may still have a shot with 5-year-old mare Confirmed Star. Though she finished well behind Carmelina in her 2025 debut in May, two runner-up finishes in $75,000 stakes competition at the end of last year suggest that she may have more to offer. National Thoroughbred League After statebred stakes action concludes at Parx Sunday, the National Thoroughbred League will sponsor three starter allowances as part of its second event this year. On May 10, the NTL organized the Pimlico Cup, an event in which the league’s 10 teams drafted a horse in three races and earned points based on their performances. The NTL Ultimate Sports Weekend at Parx will be run the same way. The final three races of the 10-race card at Parx will be conditioned allowances with $55,000 purses boosted by the NTL, an attempt to attract larger fields. The eighth and ninth races will be run at 6 1/2 furlongs for older females and males, respectively, while the 10th race will be run at 1 1/16 miles for older males. The event at Parx, which will feature several tiers of ticket packages and family activities, will be hosted by NBA Hall of Famer Julius Irving, owner of the Philadelphia Stallions. Several Philadelphia Eagles players will also be in attendance. Celebrity involvement and exclusive experiences are part of the league’s larger plan to gain national recognition. Last weekend, the NTL announced a partnership with trading card manufacturer Leaf to produce a set of 100 cards. It will be released in the fall and include the likes of Chad Brown, Jena Antonucci, and 70 horses. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
