SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Regal Glory's chances for Grade 1 glory were stymied last time out when she was bumped at the start of the Just a Game at Belmont Park and was fanned seven wide at the quarter pole en route to finishing fourth in the prestigious event. Looking to regroup against easier company, trainer Chad Brown put the mare in the $120,000 De La Rose Stakes on Sunday on the Saratoga turf, and she responded by rallying for a half-length score. Brown has had Regal Glory ($5.20), a 5-year-old Animal Kingdom mare, in his barn since she won her debut in 2018 for breeder Paul Pompa Jr., followed by the Stewart Manor Stakes at Aqueduct. In the ensuing seasons, she won the Grade 2 Lake Placid and Grade 3 Lake George in the summer of 2019 at Saratoga, as well as that year's Penn Oaks. She also won the Grade 3 Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes in September 2020. That proved to be her final start in Pompa's colors. The owner died last October at age 62, and a dispersal of his stock began at the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale. Regal Glory was purchased for $925,000, the co-highest price of the sale, by Peter Brant, another of Brown's prominent clients, with an eye toward eventually joining his White Birch Farm broodmare band. Regal Glory won the Plenty of Grace Stakes in April at Aqueduct in her first start in Brant's colors before the Just a Game, after which Brant and Brown decided to regroup. "[We thought] let's get her up to Saratoga, and put her in a race that, hopefully, we'll get a better trip and get a W under her belt," Brown said, "with an eye on trying to get a Grade 1 with her this season. That's why [Brant] kept her in training after he bought her. We'll see what's next for her, but right now, we'll just enjoy this." On Sunday, Regal Glory was sixth of seven at the quarter pole under Jose Ortiz, about four lengths back of pacesetter Shifty She. Ortiz roused his mount while keeping her in the clear on the outside, and she responded with a willing rally to drive by the fading Shifty She and the stubborn stalker Hendy Woods. She hit the finish a half-length in front, stopping the clock in 1:34.85 for the mile on turf rated firm. :: DRF's Saratoga headquarters – Stakes schedule, previews, recaps, past performances, and more "I knew that I had enough horse to do it," Ortiz said of the late rally. Hendy Woods was second, 1 1/4 lengths clear of Shifty She. The latter kept third by a length over another Brown trainee, Viadera, who had been sent away as a narrow favorite over her stablemate. Viadera, making her first start since winning the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes in November at Del Mar, rallied mildly from last in the field of seven for fourth. "She had a rough trip for her first start back," Brown said. "It happens sometimes, when you have a late-rallying horse like that. I spoke to Joel [Rosario] briefly, and he was a little frustrated, he had to stop her a couple different times, and by the time she got clear, it was just too late."
