Regal Conqueror lives up to pedigree in Ontario Damsel

Michael Burns Regal Conqueror (left) wins the Ontario Damsel over Skylander Girl on Saturday. She is a daughter of Sky Classic and Grade 2 winner Classic Stamp.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Regal Conqueror ran to her terrific turf pedigree in Saturday’s $150,000 Ontario Damsel Stakes, winning the one-mile event for 3-year-old fillies over a game Skylander Girl.

Regal Conqueror ($16.20) stalked inside under Eurico Da Silva, while Skylander Girl raced up front around the turn with Fancy Ribbons. Regal Conqueror took dead aim at the leaders early in the lane, and then wore down Skylander Girl to prevail by a half-length in 1:34.11 over the firm ground. Fancy Ribbons held on for third, while the heavily favored Llanarmon finished a non-threatening fifth in a field reduced to seven with the scratch of Amethea.

“She did today what she doesn’t do on the Polytrack, which is relax,” Da Silva said. “I had tons of horse. She ran brilliant today.”

Trained by Darwin Banach, Regal Conqueror earned $90,000 for owner Bill Sorokolit, who also raced her sire, Canadian turf champion Sky Conqueror, and her dam, Grade 2 winner Classic Stamp.
