HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Reef Runner capped off an outstanding 2025 campaign by rallying to a one-length victory over And Uwish in Saturday’s $125,000 Janus Stakes at Gulfstream Park.  Coppola, who won the race a year ago, finished a tiring third. Reef Runner finished third in the 2024 Janus and was stakes placed on two other occasions during the opening half of the season. But Reef Runner didn’t really come into himself until trainer David Fawkes had the son of The Big Beast gelded early this past spring. Reef Runner took his game to another level after being gelded, winning three of his five subsequent starts, including the Grade 2 Eddie D Stakes at Santa Anita as a prelude to his fourth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Reef Runner, a homebred owned by Alex and JoAnn Lieblong, also lost an apparent victory in the Grade 3 Green Flash Handicap at Del Mar as a result of a controversial stewards disqualification. :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. Reef Runner covered five furlongs over a firm course in :54.18 seconds and paid $5.60. “I got a little nervous when Coppola got what looked like a comfortable lead,” Fawkes said. “It was a great way to end the season. He’s been really good this year.  From the day he was gelded, he was like a different horse.  He’s got a strong kick when he’s ridden right.” Ms. Bucchero showed a bit of a new dimension, rallying from off the pace to a 1 1/2-length victory over Nic’s Style in the $125,000 Sugar Swirl Stakes. Defending champion Mystic Lake finished third as the tepid 6-5 favorite in the six-furlong fixture for fillies and mares. Ms. Bucchero, whose two most recent victories came in gate-to-wire fashion, was eased off the early pace of Mystic Lake entering the turn by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., who was aboard the 5-year-old filly for the first time. Ms. Bucchero cut the corner into the stretch, wore down Mystic Lake nearing midstretch and won going away. Nic’s Style, unbeaten in three previous starts over the local strip, raced well placed off the early leaders, came five wide into the stretch, continued willingly but could not match strides with the winner through the final furlong. Ms. Bucchero is trained by her owner Diane Morici. She completed the distance over a fast track in 1:09.47 and paid $8.80 for her 10th victory in 19 lifetime starts. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
