Redemption time for Meadow Vespers

Meadow Vespers, third after a troubled start as the favorite in the recent Wolverine Stakes, will carry high weight of 120 pounds when he looks for redemption in the $50,000 Michigan Breeders Cup Handicap at Pinnacle Race Course. The 1 1/16-mile race attracted seven statebred colts and geldings, and it is the seventh of eight races on a card that begins at 4 p.m.

Meadow Vespers finished 3 1/2 lengths behind Its a Ego Thing and Weatherstorm in the Wolverine after stumbling at the start and rallying late. Richard Rettele trains Meadow Vespers, who is a past Michigan champion, and Ivan Gonzalez gets the return call.

Its a Ego Thing, owned and trained by Randy Russell, gets in at 116 pounds. Ricardo Barrios, who rode him in theWolverine, will be back in the saddle. Its a Ego Thing has finished worse than third only twice in 23 starts.

All I Can Get, fourth in the Wolverine, will carry 118 pounds on Sunday.
