Red Shores: PEI Colt Stakes ahead on Saturday

The oldest Standardbred Stakes race in Canada, The P.E.I. Colt Stakes, celebrates its 88th anniversary on the traditional doubleheader Saturday at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

With 28 races scheduled on the day, the first 13 dashes populate the afternoon program, featuring the 2-year-old pacing colts and fillies starting at 12:30 P.M.

Post four has the morning line favorite in the race 12 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Gold division for pacing fillies. Singing Ramona is that morning line choice with Adam Merner driving for trainer Jamie Smith. Smith bred the filly in partnership with Hubert (Socke) MacDonald. Singing Ramona was a winner her last start in the Milton Downey Memorial stake at Exhibition Park Raceway in Saint John, N.B.

Her top rivals are Itsuptoyou (to be driven by Gilles Barrieau) and Our Girl Annie (Brodie MacPhee).

The Post Time Picks think last Saturday's result from Saint John could come again. "Singing Ramona looked awesome at EPR in Saint John, going right down the highway and scoring in 1:59. It was an impressive trip and now Merner returns so they could be singing a winning tune on P.E.I."

Rock N Roll Cays has rail control in the other C$11,750 Gold filly division in race 10 for driver Gilles Barrieau and trainer Jeff Holmes. The Blaine Thibeau-bred filly has two wins and two seconds in her career.

The rookie pacing fillies see C$5,875 Grassroots action in races one, three and eight.

Fishermans Son has the outside post six as he tries to extend his win streak to four in a C$12,300 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Gold division in race 11. Danny Gillis drives the Arthur Blue Chip colt for trainer Walker Walker. Arnold Hagen's Redland Farms bred the colt in partnership with Kathleen Charlton.

Malignity will look to reignite his win streak in C$12,300 Gold action in race six for trainer-driver Paul Langille. Bred by Gary MacPherson, the Malicious pacer has won five of his seven lifetime starts but had his win streak snapped by Fishermans Son in his latest race.

The 2-year-old colts have C$6,150 Grassroots splits in races two and four.

Race seven is a leg of the Island Oceans Aged Trot Mares Series, presented by JD Marine and Diving, carrying a C$4,300 purse.

Therealprincess Aims For 12 In P.E.I. Colt Stakes

All win streaks come to an end, but Therealprincess plans on riding hers for as long as possible as she takes on P.E.I. Colt Stakes competition Saturday evening at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The 15-dash program is the second half of a Saturday doubleheader at the capital oval with a 6:30 P.M. opening post time.

Therealprincess leaves from post five in her C$13,800 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Gold division for 3-year-old pacing fillies in race 10. Corey MacPherson drives the undefeated filly from the Ed Doucette barn. The Blaine Thibeau-bred daughter of Source Of Pride was a recent winner in two straight heats in The Maritimer stake at Exhibition Park Raceway in Saint John, N.B. Her main foes are post six starter JJ Scarlett (to be driven by Danny Gillis) and Kcs Starlite (Ken Murphy) with post two.

The Post Time Picks sees Therealprincess's winning streak continuing. "Therealprincess has been perfect in 2022 and won two races on the same day in Saint John. She also has the fastest win time and the most money on the page, so expect the win streak to hit 12."

The other C$13,800 Gold filly split is in race 13 as Cougar On A Terr (Gillis) is the top choice with post four from the Walter Walker stable. Bred by Paul Conway, Cougar On A Terr was second to Therealprincess in The Maritimer final last week.

The 3-year-old fillies have C$6,900 Grassroots divisions in races one, three and six.

Breeder Brian MacLeod won't know who to cheer for in race eight in a C$13,100 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Gold division for 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings. Fern Hill General (Brodie MacPhee) is at 3-1 morning line odds from post four, while Fern Hill Gusto (Marc Campbell) has post five at 5-2 odds as the morning line favorite.

Brumby is top choice in his C$13,100 colt Gold division in race 12. Bred by Belinda Gray, the Pang Shui colt has Adam Merner at the lines for trainer Jamie Smith.

The 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings have Grassroots action in races two and four for a C$6,550 purse in each.

Race seven has the top Open pacing mares on the East Coast in a C$5,230 division of the Atlantic Aged Pacing Mares presented by Standardbred Canada.
