Mambacita and Walner Payton won as favorites and Mommamia Volo pulled off a big upset in a trio of $105,900 International Stallion Stakes events for 2-year-old trotting fillies on Saturday afternoon at The Red Mile. Driven by David Miller, Mambacita led to the 28 2/5 opening quarter and then yielded to Life Itself (Ake Svanstedt) before the 57 3/5 half. Miller re-moved Mambacita back to the point entering the final bend, and after clicking off three-quarters in 1:26 3/5, Mambacita kicked away in a 27 1/5 last quarter, winning by 2 1/4 lengths in 1:53 4/5. Caviart Gwen (Andy McCarthy) got up for second and Una Madonna (Yannick Gingras) was third. "She's been pretty consistent and steady all year, has never really lost her form and is just really sharp right now," David Miller said after the race. "I thought she had a real good shot of winning, and that wasn't the horse that I figured I would be following, so I went ahead and moved her again. She was pretty strong." Tony Alagna trains Mambacita, a filly from the first crop of Tactical Landing, for co-owner/breeder Crawford Farms and co-owners Alagna Racing and Pryde Stables. Mambacita has a record of 4-2-1 from eight trips behind the gate, pushed her earnings to $329,262, and returned $3.12 to win as the 1-2 favorite. In the second grouping Walner Payton (Dexter Dunn) tucked into third beyond the 28 4/5 quarter after floating out from post seven. Dunn put her in motion two-wide in the backstretch after that, and she would work her way around leader Fruit Cake (Gingras) for control after the 57 1/5 half. It was all Walner Payton from there, as she stepped through three-quarters in 1:25 1/5 and then trotted home in 27 1/5 to win by four lengths in 1:52 2/5. Secret Volo (Brian Sears) was second, followed by Emira Mil IT (Svanstedt). A daughter of Walner trained by Chris Ryder for owner Ken Jacobs, Walner Payton now has three wins, four seconds, and one third from ten lifetime attempts to go with a bankroll of $368,650. Bred by Steve Stewart and Doug Hutchins, Walner Payton was a $510,000 purchase at last year's Lexington Selected Yearling Sale, and she paid $3.22 to win as the choice. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter Mommamia Volo, piloted by Todd McCarthy, made her stakes debut a winning one in the last flight. If The Shoe Fits (A. McCarthy) and Kayleigh S (Sears) set an easy tempo of just 30, 58 4/5, and 1:28 4/5, but Mommamia Volo worked out a second-over trip on the last turn behind Yes Please (Gingras), surged three-wide into the lead in the stretch, and held off a gaining Quick Stop (Tim Tetrick) to prevail by a neck in 1:55 4/5. If The Shoe Fits ended up third. "This week, I was pretty confident she'd bounce back pretty good," trainer Carter Pinske said after the race, in regards to her break in stride in an overnight race last week. "It was just a bit of greenness. She was out and rolling pretty good there - she looked to me like she was going to be a winner, but as soon as she cleared the horse [she broke]." Kentuckiana Farms and Jorgen Jahre bred and own Mommamia Volo, another Tactical Landing filly and a half-sister to multi-time world champion Amigo Volo. The Pinske-trained Mommamia Volo made her second appearance in the winner's circle from five starts, she has now pocketed $60,300, and she returned $44.46 to win as a 21-1 shot. --quotes gathered by Ray Cotolo--
