Red Mile: Unreasonable surges from last to first in Kentucky Championship Series

Unreasonable 8-19-24
Amanda Stephens Unreasonable showed a sub-26 second final quarter for her second straight start

Unreasonable was the last of eight 2-year-old pacing fillies at the top of the stretch in Monday's $80,000 Kentucky Championship Series showdown at The Red Mile, but by the time they reached the finish line, she'd circled all of her rivals to grab a 1:50 4/5 victory.

Treacheryinthedark Dexter Dunn) got away well from post three and hit the quarter in 27 second before she yielded to sit in the pocket behind a two-wide Sweet Ballad (Yannick Gingras). Sweet Ballad would go on to click off a 55 second half and a 1:23 2/5 three-quarters, with favored Duration (Todd McCarthy) on a first-over advance out of fourth at that station. Meanwhile, Unreasonable (Scott Zeron) was at the caboose of the eight-pack and eight lengths behind.

In the stretch Sweet Ballad was game and continued to show the way as Duration's brush stalled out. However, Zeron fanned Unreaasonable out widest of all, and behind a 25 4/5 final kicker, she blew by the entire pack and defeated Sweet Ballad by three-quarters of a length. Duration fought off Champagne Room (Andy McCarthy) to finish third.

A daughter of Huntsville bred by Steve Stewart and Frank Chick, Unreasonable is owned by trainer Erv Miller in partnership with David J. Miller. Unreasonable has won two of her four starts, has banked $46,600 and returned $8.48 to win as the 3-1 third choice.

Miki And Minnie (by Always B Miki, bred by owners Craig Henderson, Robert Mondillo and Lawrence Minowitz, paid $6.76 to win) took the lone $30,000 Commonwealth Series flight from the pocket in 1:50 4/5 with Peter Wrenn in the bike for trainer Chris Ryder. Miki And Minnie, who started her career with four straight second-place finishes, broke her maiden and has now banked $40,000.

Two $15,000 Golden Rod Series divisions also went behind the gate and were won by Faze (by Sweet Lou, bred by Diamond Creek Farm, Shmuel Farhi and Spreydon Lodge Ltd. and retained by that group's racing operations) in 1:52 for driver Tim Tetrick and trainer Nancy Takter and Odds On Collateral (by Downbytheseaside, bred by Odds On Nourrir, paid $68.76 to win) in 1:52 1/5 for driver Peter Wrenn, trainer Melanie Wrenn and owner Odds On Racing.
