Red Mile: Sunday night racing to return this year

webmaster|Mar 13, 2024

As The Red Mile readies for its 2024 meet, Gabe Prewitt, Vice-President of Racing, has announced that Sunday night racing has been approved and will return to the iconic track.

The Red Mile, celebrating its 150th season, will open on July 21 with a Sunday night 5:05 PM (local time) post time and will host nine such Sunday night programs, with Kentucky Futurity Day scheduled for Sunday, October 6 returning to an afternoon 1 PM post time.

In announcing that The Red Mile “will be the place to be on Sunday night,” Prewitt said, “as it was very enthusiastically received last season and we are excited to have the opportunity to build on that.”

Prewitt continued, “We will have Stakes racing every single day of the live meet, and to kick things off, on opening day, we will feature over $400,000 in purses highlighted by eight $50,000 Kentucky Proud Sire Stakes Finals.

”On September 15, we will have $3.4 million in purses up for grabs as we host the Kentucky Sire Stakes Finals for 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds, as well”

The famed one-mile oval will also be home to the $800,000 KYSS Commonwealth Finals, as well as the lucrative Bluegrass Series, Golden Rod events and the Wildcat Series, all leading up to Kentucky Futurity Day featuring four Allerage events, the Glen Garnsey Memorial, the Tattersalls and the fabled Kentucky Futurity trotting events for sophomore trotting fillies and, of course, the colts and geldings.

The Red Mile recently added Emily Gaskin-Ratcliff as Director of Sponsorships and Scott Freeman as Track Superintendent to their outstanding roster of Department Heads and anticipate a very successful 2024 meet with the best stables and horsemen participating in the lucrative Stakes program.
