Southwind Tyrion made some history on Friday afternoon at The Red Mile, becoming harness racing's fastest 2-year-old male trotter by virtue of a 1:51 1/5 performance in the first of a trio of International Stallion Series contests.  Cuatro De Julio and Peter Haughton Memorial champion Zenith Stride were also victorious in those events. Driven by trainer Ake Svanstedt in the $85,600 dash, Southwind Tyrion went right to the lead from the pole position and put up panels of 27 4/5, 55 1/5, and 1:23 2/5.  Mohawk Million champion Venerate (Andy Miller) was moving up to challenge Southwind Tyrion first-up from third on the way to three-quarters, but when he broke past that point, Southwind Tyrion ended up on a clear lead turning for home.  Through the stretch Southwind Tyrion had plenty left in reserve, and he defeated In Range (Tim Tetrick) by a length and three-quarters. Cricket Fashion (Dexter Dunn) finished third. The 1:51 1/5 clocking lowered the previous world record for the division of 1:51 3/5 that was set by Walner at The Red Mile in 2016. "My plan was to sit behind Venerate, but I had to push him a little when Tetrick came, and then he was a little grabby, so he was too fast for Venerate to come," said Svanstedt.  "He felt good the whole mile, but he has raced good every time. "If the horse feels good at home and he's sound and healthy, we're going to go to the Breeders Crown." A Muscle Hill colt, Southwind Tyrion is owned by Svanstedt and S R F Stable. Bred by Southwind Farms LLC., he was a $145,000 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale buy and is out of the Cantab Hall mare Taylor Jean and his third dam is two-time Breeders Crown champion Me Maggie. Southwind Tyrion has a record of 5-1-1 from seven appearances, pushed his bankroll to $280,797, and paid $4.40 to win. In the next $86,600 grouping, Cuatro De Julio, driven for the first time by Louis Baudron, one of co-owner Jean-Pierre Dubois's grandsons, darted to the front from post five and carved out stations of 27 4/5, 55, and 1:23 2/5. Delayed Hanover (Svanstedt) angled out from the three-hole coming off the final bend and had dead-aim at Cuatro De Julio through the lane, but Cuatro De Julio dug in gamely and fought him off to score by three-parts of a length in 1:51 3/5.  Jack Fire (Andrew McCarthy) took third. "(Trainer Marie Ortolan-Bar) just told me do your best, and she did great, great work with the horse," remarked Baudron.  "He is so fast, but he had stamina left in the last 400 meters." Cuatro De Julio, a colt by Trixton, is trained by Ortolan-Bar for owner D Farm LLC. and was bred by Dream With Me Stable.  Cuatro De Julio won for the ninth time from 13 efforts, and he has now earned $129.275.  Cuatro De Julio, who returned $6.20 to win, is out of the Ready Cash mare Clarabelle, who is from the family of Dubois's former Italian Derby winner Infinitif. Zenith Stride (Brian Sears) hadn't won since his 87-1 stunner in the Peter Haughton Memorial on Hambletonian Day at the Meadowlands, but he changed that with a 1:53 2/5 effort in today's last $86,600 International Stallion Stakes showdown.  Locatelli (Dexter Dunn) was able to get around Fly Light (Svanstedt) for command after a 27 3/5 opening quarter, but then Locatelli made a break, leaving Fly Light back on top before the 55 3/5 half.  Svanstedt put on the brakes after that, getting to three-quarters in just 1:25, but Sears angled Zenith Stride out from the pocket late on the far turn, and he would overtake Fly Light in upper stretch.  From there, Zenith Stride had to fend off Sevenshadesofgrey (Yannick Gingras) to his outside and Magical Muscle Man (Scott Zeron) to his outside, and he was able to do that, bettering the former by a length. "I think just practice," responded trainer Mark Harder when asked about what has been the key to Zenith Stride going from a horse who made breaks early in the season to a reliable performer now.  "Even training down as a young horse in the winter, he'd do goofy things.  On his day he'd do things great and trot nice.  He'd always trot nice, but he'd just do silly things.  We did some blood work on him (after a sixth-place finish in the Bluegrass last week), and we did find something that we could do to help him health-wise.  I don't know if he was 100 percent today, but he was better. "A couple of those things look pretty sharp.  Whether we're up to them, I don't know, but I think the owner is pretty game.  We'll probably go (to the Breeders Crown)."  The victorious Muscle Hill colt is owned by Emilio and Maria Rosati. Zenith Stride, who was bred by Fair Winds Farm Inc. and fetched $350,000 at last year's Standardbred Horse Sale, has two wins and two seconds from eight starts, has pocketed $204,825, and paid $12.40 to win. Zenith Stride is the first foal out of the Credit Winner mare Open Access ($113,438, 1:54 1/5), a full sister to Dejarmbro (1:52 2/5, $1,137,493).
