Amanda Stephens Brodeur won the fastest of Monday's Kentucky Sire Stakes races

The Kentucky Sire Stakes slate for 4-year-old trotters at The Red Mile got going on Monday afternoon with Brodeur and Bestfriend Volo winning the sections for horses and geldings and Railee Something taking the tilt for the mares. Each race went for a purse of $35,000.

Brodeur (Marvin Luna) won the first clash for the males in 1:51 3/5 after he led through stations of 27 4/5, 56 2/5 and 1:25. Prince Of Honor (Todd McCarthy) advanced from third-over to get second, but was five lengths behind Brodeur, and The Hazelton (Devon Tharps) was third after an unsuccessful first-over attempt.

A son of Tactical Landing bred by Carter Duer, Brodeur is owned by trainer Anette Lorentzon in partnership with Acl Stuteri AB and Kjell Johansson. This was his sixth win from 32 starts, he has now put away $255,380 and he paid $6.60 to win as the 2-1 second choice.

Djimon (David Miller) cut fractions of 28 1/5, 56 3/5 and 1:25 2/5 in the other flight for the horses and geldings, but Bestfriend Volo (Yannick Gingras), who tipped out of third before three-quarters, blew by Djimon to hit the front before they turned into the stretch. Through the lane, Bestfriend Volo trotted away from his rivals, downing Yo Tater (Verlin Yoder), who angled from the two-hole in the drive to the wire, by 3 1/2 lengths in a 1:52 effort. Djimon ended up third.

Nancy Takter trains Bestfriend Volo, a gelding by Walner, and also co-owns him with Christina Takter, 3 Brothers Stables and Deja Blu. Bred by Kentuckiana Farms LLC. and Jorgen Jahre Jr., Bestfriend Volo made his 12th trip to the winner's circle, has now earned $288,120 and returned $2.78 to win as the chalk.

In the single event for mares, 1-9 favorite Railee Something (Andy McCarthy) was on the engine at the 27 3/5 quarter, 55 3/5 half and 1:24 2/5 and kept clear to the wire, defeating pocket-sitter Vintage (Gingras) by two lengths in a 1:53 1/5 performance. Muscling Vegas (Andy Miller) was the third-place finisher.

Bred by owner Ron Mersky and trained by Roger Cullipher, Railee Something is a daughter of International Moni. She won for the 14th time in her 37th appearance, has banked $803,186 and paid $2.10 to win.
