Red Mile: Caviart Camden lowers world record

Amanda Stephens Caviart Camden rallied from off-the-pace to win in a world record clocking Tuesday at The Red Mile

Caviart Camden became the fastest 2-year-old colt pacer in harness racing history after winning Tuesday afternoon's one $40,000 Kentucky Championship Series event at The Red Mile in 1:48 3/5 for driver Yannick Gingras, trainer Tony Alagna, and owner/breeder Caviart Farms.

Vicious (Dexter Dunn) left from the pole position and carved out the opening quarter in 28 2/5, but he would be overtaken by 1-9 favorite Pebble Beach (Todd McCarthy) past that marker. After moving to the front, Pebble Beach laid down middle-half fractions of 54 3/5 and 1:21 2/5 and continued to show the way into the stretch. Meanwhile, Caviart Camden followed along in fourth until Gingras brought him to the outside passing three-quarters.

Through the lane it looked like Pebble Beach was on his way to victory, but he began to come under urging in the last eighth while Caviart Camden was in top gear two-wide. With one last push late, Caviart Camden got by to prevail by a neck, with Pebble Beach second and Wolftrax (Scott Zeron) gaining to finish third.

The time of 1:48 3/5 eclipsed the previous world record of 1:49 that was held by Sweet Lou, Downbytheseaside, and Caviart Camden's sire, Huntsville. It also equaled the clocking set by filly Warrawee Ubeaut (2018) and gelding Elver Hanover (2019).

Now a three-time winner from five starts, Caviart Camden, who is out of the Sportswriter mare Caviart Christa, has earned $43,200. He was the 8-1 second choice and paid $19.60 to win.

McCarthy and Alagna joined forces earlier on the card to win the single $40,000 Kentucky Championship Series event for rookie pacing fillies with Boudoir Hanover in 1:51 1/5. After being positioned third through fractions of 28 1/5, 56 4/5, and 1:25 3/5, McCarthy angled her out for the drive and used a 25 1/5 final kicker to pace past stablemate and pocket-sitter Dont Fence Me In (Dexter Dunn) to score by three-parts of a length. Pace-setter Sloopy (Gingras) gave way and wound up third.

Boudoir Hanover, a daughter of Captaintreacherous and the first foal out of millionaire Bedroomconfessions (American Ideal, 1:48 4/5), is trained by Alagna for owners Riverview Racing LLC., Alagna Racing LLC., Caviart Farms, and D Plouffe And S Head. Bred by Riverview Breeding LLC. and Visionary Breeders LLC., Boudoir Hanover was consigned to last year's Standardbred Horse Sale, where she brought $200,000. She broke her maiden in her fifth try, has now pocketed $35,600, and returned $10.00 to win as the 4-1 third choice.

Alagna also won a $20,000 Kentucky Commonwealth Series event for 2-year-old pacing fillies with Queen Of Success in 1:51 3/5. Andrew McCarthy drove the daughter of Captaintreacherous-Cashaway owned by Alagna Racing LLC., Caviart Farms, and Robert Leblanc. She was bred by Brittany Farms and Marvin Katz and sold for $45,000 at the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale. Kentukylady took the other Kentucky Commonwealth Series test for that group in 1:51 4/5 with Andy Miller driving for trainer Jack Gray Jr. and owner Russell Hundley. Kentukylady, who was acquired for $19,000 at the 2020 Ohio Selected Jug Sale, is a Big Bad John-Four Starzzzz Hope filly bred by Walter S Fister LLC.

Boston, a gelded son of Sweet Lou-Hollyrocker, was a 1:50 3/5 victor for Todd McCarthy and Brett Pelling in the sole $20,000 Kentucky Commonwealth Series dash for rookie pacing males. Boston is a Diamond Creek Farm homebred.
