Red Mile: Broadway Donna dominates in Kentucky Filly Futurity

Derick Giwner Going two heats for the first time posed no problem for Broadway Donna

After cruising in her elimination earlier on the card, Broadway Donna came right back and did the same thing in the final, rolling to a 1:51 2/5 victory in the $218,400 Kentucky Filly Futurity for 3-year-old trotting fillies on Sunday afternoon at The Red Mile.

Broadway Donna got away in third from post one, while Spicedbourbongirl (Jeff Gregory) chopped out the first quarter in 27 3/5. Miller made his move just past that marker, though, with Broadway Donna taking control well before the 55 3/5 half. She would continue to show the way at the 1:23 4/5 three-quarters, with a first-over Side Bet Hanover (Corey Callahan) unable to reach her wheel.

Through the stretch Broadway Donna confidently stepped away from Spicedbourbongirl, and Broadway Donna would report home with the victory by around three lengths. Spicedbourbongirl held second, with Flowers N Songs (Doug McNair) third. Gin And Lindy (Tim Tetrick) got fourth, and Earn Your Wings (Brett Miller) finished fifth.

"It was pretty much identical trips," said David Miller about her performances, a 1:51 1/5 elimination win and then the second heat that just a fifth of a second slower. "She was just the same the second heat as she was the first. She did it pretty easy. She's been pretty honest and pretty consistent her whole life."

Jim Campbell trains Broadway Donna, a Donato Hanover filly, for owner/breeder Fashion Farms LLC. Broadway Donna, the Dan Patch Award winner for best 2-year-old trotting filly last year, now has a record of 14-2-1 from 20 tries, and she is rapidly approaching $1 million in earnings. The 3-5 favorite, she returned $3.20 to win.

"I couldn't be more proud of her today," said Campbell. "She just showed what she can really do. To go out and go two heats like she did today was very impressive. She's an amazing filly."
