Red Mile: Beautiful Sin triumphant in Kentucky Filly Futurity

Trainer-driver Ake Svanstedt has been on quite a tear at The Red Mile this fall and his second start behind Beautiful Sin was something of beauty as the Muscle Hill filly posted a minor upset in capturing the $267,000 Kentucky Filly Futurity Sunday afternoon in Lexington.
Svanstedt knew where he wanted to be from the outset, and he was able to energize Beautiful Sin and tuck right behind 3-5 favorite When Dovescry as the field entered the first turn. When Dovescry, the Hambletonian Oaks champion, marched along on the lead through fractions of 27 1/5 and 55 2/5, looking quite comfortable for driver Simon Allard, but when Millies Possesion and driver Dexter Dunn pulled to the outside before the half the pace accelerated in a major way over the track rated as “good.”
When Dovecry had three-quarters in 1:22 2/5 and was able to shake off the first-over challenge, but Svanstedt and Beautiful Sin wasted little time going on the offensive, and in early stretch they collared the favorite in short order. Svanstedt kept calling on his filly to remain focused as The Ice Dutchess and Yannick Gingras moved through along the inside, and Beautiful Sin responded to his shaking of the lines to keep her head up and roll through the wire in 1:50 1/5, just two-fifths of a second shy of the world record.
Owned by Lennart Agren’s S R F Stable, Beautiful Sin returned $9.00 in winning for the second time in nine starts this year, both stakes victories over The Red Mile’s surface.
“It was a total surprise compared to where she was two months ago,” said Agren following the victory. Agren gave the superbly-bred filly to Svanstedt with eyes on the future but hardly looked to this year as a possibility. “I had to do something before her 4-year-old season.”
Jeff Gural bred Beautiful Sin along with Moon Goddess LLC.
“It’s unbelievable considering what happened last year,” said Gural referring to a serious injury suffered by the then 2-year-old filly. “Jimmy Takter thought she might never race again.”
