A pair of Allerage Open Paces on Sunday afternoon at The Red Mile saw victories go to mare Twin B Joe Fresh and stallion Ken Hanover.
Twin B Joe Fresh (Dexter Dunn) faced Sylvia Hanover (Tim Tetrick) and Yankee B Something (Andy McCarthy) in the $64,000 race for mares and won in a track record 1:47 3/5. Twin B Joe Fresh cut fractions of 27 1/5, 54 4/5 and 1:21 4/5, got separation on Sylvia Hanover on the last turn and held on after Sylvia Hanover gained in the final eighth to prevail by half a length. Yankee B Something was a well-beaten third.
"She's earned a lot of respect. People I've run across drive three or seven hours to come and watch her race. What bigger compliment can a horse get than that? We're just thrilled that she came through and we put on a show," winning trainer/co-owner Ryder offered. "It's just a fantastic experience. Good old Sylvia, she made us work for it. That's what we wanted to see, but we held on."
Ryder also said the plan is to race the 2024 Horse of the Year again in 2026, saying, "As along as she stays as good as she is, I believe we'll race next year. It's not official, but it's looking that way."
A 5-year-old daughter of Roll With Joe bred by Brittany Farms, Roll With Joe is co-owned by Dunn and Ryder with Peter Trebotica and Barry Spak. she has 36 wins, nine seconds and two thirds from 49 outings, has earned $2,862,479 and returned $2.24 to win.

In the $145,500 open pace, Captain Albano (Todd McCarthy) worked his way around a stubborn Captain Luke (Dunn) to take the top spot past the 27 2/5 quarter and hit the half in 54 seconds flat. Ken Hanover (David Miller) then began a first-over march out of fourth that carried him alongside Captain Albano before the 1:21 3/5 three-quarters and by him in the lane.
Ken Hanover would remain in front to the end after he went by Captain Albano, defeating a gaining Abuckabett Hanover (Scott Zeron) by half a length in 1:48. Admiral Hill (Yannick Gingras) was up for third, followed by Muskateer Hanover and Captain Albano, who faded at 1-5 in his first start off Lasix since last July.
"My horse, he just felt really good today," Miller said after the win. "He's been a really good horse since he was 2. He's gotter way better and way stronger the older he's gotten."
Trainer Polie Mallar also co-owns Ken Hanover, a 5-year-old Captaintreacherous stallion bred by Hanover Shoe Farms, with partners Patrick Leavitt, William Jordan and Dennis Osterholt. He has a summary of 20-9-11 from 55 appearances, has pocketed $1,038,800 and returned $11.34 to win.
