ELMONT, N.Y. – It has been a terrific Belmont Park spring/summer meet for the duo of trainer Wesley Ward and jockey John Velazquez, who have teamed up to win 10 races from 16 starters. Saturday, the pair will look to put an exclamation point on their success when Velazquez rides the Ward-trained Red Ghost in the Grade 3, $150,000 Victory Ride Stakes for 3-year-old fillies going 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt Belmont Park. :: Enhance your handicapping with DRF’s Belmont Park Clocker Report The Victory Ride, a potential stepping-stone to the Grade 1 Test at Saratoga on Aug. 7, is sandwiched on Saturday’s card in between the Belmont Oaks and Belmont Derby. Red Ghost, a daughter of Ghostzapper owned by Douglas Scharbauer, is 3 for 4, including two wins in as many starts this year. She came from slightly off the pace to win an allowance at Keeneland before getting passed by horses and coming back to win the Grade 3 Miss Preakness at Pimlico on May 14. Her lone loss came in a turf race when Ward ran her just 15 days after she won an off-the-turf maiden at Saratoga. Since the Miss Preakness, Red Ghost has been training at Keeneland, where she shows several solid five-furlong workouts over the main track. She drew post 6 in a field of eight that includes two horses – Ova Charged and Shop Girl – who are main-track-only entrants in Saturday’s Blue Sparkler Stakes at Monmouth Park. “Her workouts have been great,” said Ward. “She’s been working with some nice horses at Keeneland. It’s just a question of whether she’s good enough. I think that outside post is going to help Johnny decide what he wants to do.” Bella Sofia on the rail, Miss Brazil in post 3, and potentially Ova Charge, if she runs here, should provide a solid pace in the Victory Ride. Trainer Brad Cox has the uncoupled entry of Australasia and Injected entered in the Victory Ride. Australasia, a Louisiana-bred daughter of Sky Kingdom, is 6 for 6, including a win in the Jersey Girl Stakes here on June 6. :: Get Mike Beer and David Aragona’s Betting Strategies for Saturday’s card at Belmont Park “She stepped up and showed she’s a filly that was definitely worthy of us taking the next step into graded company,” Cox said. “Excited how she’s doing. I think she’ll be tough.” Inject has won two straight, including the Goldfinch Stakes in the mud at Prairie Meadows on May 15. She is a half-sister to Tapwrit, who won the Belmont Stakes in 2017. “If she likes Belmont as much as he did, we should be in good shape,” Cox said. “I feel like she’s a filly the longer we’ve had her the better she’s gotten.” Joel Rosario rides Australasia from post 7. Tyler Gaffalione is aboard Inject from post 2. Souper Sensational has competed in three consecutive graded stakes, including a fourth in the Eight Belles at Churchill on April 30. Casse has put some fast works into her to be ready for her first start in 10 weeks.
