HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – A class raise and more distance put the unblemished record of Red Carpet Ready in serious jeopardy Saturday when she faces her toughest task yet in the Grade 2 Davona Dale at Gulfstream Park. Or do they? “I’m going to disagree,” said Glenn “Bo” Bromagen, whose family’s Ashbrook Farm co-owns Red Carpet Ready with Upland Flats Racing. “Obviously, we’re getting into deeper waters now, but our plan all along was to stretch her out and see how far she can take us. She’s done nothing wrong so far.” Red Carpet Ready, with Luis Saez riding from post 3, is one of 10 3-year-old fillies in the $200,000 Davona Dale, a 100-point qualifier (50-20-15-10-5) toward the Kentucky Oaks on May 5. A daughter of Oscar Performance from the Street Sense mare Wild Silk, she has flashed uncommon speed in winning all three starts – none when favored – starting with a 10-length debut score at 36-1 and extending most recently to an emphatic victory here four Saturdays ago for Saez and trainer Rusty Arnold in the Grade 3 Forward Gal going seven furlongs. :: Get ready for Gulfstream Park racing with DRF Past Performances, Picks, and Clocker Reports.  The Davona Dale, a one-turn mile, is the farthest Red Carpet Ready will have raced. In contrast, several of her top opponents already have gone a mile or farther, most notably Leave No Trace (post 10, Tyler Gaffalione), who makes her seasonal debut after a terrific 2-year-old season in which she won the Grade 1 Spinaway, was third in the Grade 1 Frizette, and was second in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Leave No Trace has recorded seven timed workouts at Gulfstream for trainer Phil Serpe since getting a short break following the Breeders’ Cup. As with Red Carpet Ready and perhaps a few others in here, the game plan is to use the Davona Dale as a springboard to the Ashland on April 8 at Keeneland ahead of the Oaks. “This seemed like a good starting point,” Serpe said. “We like the way she’s coming into the race. She’s grown quite a bit from 2 to 3. Everything’s gone very well, and I do think she’s fit enough.” The depth of an outstanding renewal of the Davona Dale further extends to fillies such as Atomically, trained by Todd Pletcher, and the Chad Brown duo of Undervalued Asset and Guns n’ Graces. Atomically (post 1, Edgar Perez) was third as the favorite behind Red Carpet Ready in the Forward Gal in her first start since she was seventh in the BC Juvenile Fillies. She already has won twice at Gulfstream, albeit both wins came in restricted company. :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. Owned by the Klaravich Stable of Seth Klarman, the Speightstown filly was a solid second behind Red Carpet Ready in the Forward Gal after easily winning on debut at Aqueduct in November. Ortiz, for his part, has been red-hot the first two months of 2023 in once again establishing himself as the early front-runner for another Eclipse Award. Guns n’ Graces (post 6, Joel Rosario) comes nowhere close to matching the 80-ish Beyer Speed Figures of the favorites, and yet the fact Brown chose to run her in this spot while also getting Rosario to ride surely will pique fans’ interest. She only got a 54 Beyer in a last-out triumph in a Dec. 23 maiden race at Tampa Bay Downs, but she was visibly impressive in capturing that two-turn race by open lengths. Rounding out the cast are Infinite Diamond, Positano Sunset, Lynx, Adeliese’s Smile, and Dorth Vader. Of those, Infinite Diamond and Dorth Vader might stand the best chances to crash the vertical wagers, as both are ungraded stakes winners who already have registered a Beyer in the 80s. This is the 36th Davona Dale, which honors the Hall of Fame filly who helped Calumet Farm regain some of its lost glory in the late 1970s. The homebred daughter of Best Turn won 11 of 18 starts for John Veitch, the Hall of Fame trainer who died last month at age 77. Post time is 4:37 p.m. Eastern for the Davona Dale, the 12th of 14 races on the blockbuster Fountain of Youth card. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
