A sale-record $1.8 million Into Mischief filly helped the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale finish with record gross and average figures as it continues to surge in importance in the juvenile market. The two-day auction at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium closed on Tuesday evening with 326 horses sold for gross receipts of $29,374,000, according to figures reported by Fasig-Tipton. That marked an 18 percent gain in gross from the 2018 renewal, when 333 horses sold for $24,868,500. It surpassed the previous record gross of $25,237,000 in 2017. The sale's average price finished at $90,104, soaring 21 percent from the $74,680 average last year and eclipsing the high-water mark of $88,859 from 2015. The median was $43,000, up 13 percent from $38,000 last year. The Into Mischief filly sold to bloodstock agent Donato Lanni, on behalf of owner Michael Lund Petersen. Bob Baffert, who has conditioned horses including Grade 1 winner Mor Spirit for Petersen, will train the filly, whose sire is North America's reigning leading juvenile sire. Her price eclipsed the $1.5 million paid for the Curlin colt Curlin's Honor in 2017 for the top price ever at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old sale, which has now produced seven-figure horses in five consecutive years. The Into Mischief filly was bred in Kentucky by Grace Thoroughbred Holdings, a moniker for Barbara Banke of Stonestreet Farm. She was a $220,000 purchase by Brad Grady's Grand Oaks at last fall's Keeneland September yearling sale, and was consigned to Fasig-Tipton by Bobby Dodd, as agent. She placed herself in a standout position at this sale by breezing a furlong in 10 seconds during last week's under-tack preview show, among five tied for the fastest move at that distance. "Great day with a great team," Grady said on Twitter after the sale. The filly is out of the stakes-placed Kafwain mare Peggy Jane. The mare is the dam of one winner from two starters. One of the most anticipated lots of the auction came late in the session, as a half-brother to last Saturday's Preakness Stakes winner War of Will sold for $260,000 to L&N Racing. The colt, by perennial leading sire Tapit, will be trained by Steve Asmussen, who has teamed up with L&N to campaign horses including Kentucky Derby runner-up Lookin At Lee. "We took a shot, couldn't pass up a Tapit that is a half to War of Will," Michael Levinson of the family ownership group said on Twitter. The half-brother to War of Will, out of the French stakes-winning Sadler's Wells mare Visions of Clarity, was bred by the Niarchos family's Flaxman Holdings. He was a $130,000 purchase by Sensible Equine at last October's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale, and was offered at the Midlantic auction by Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables, as agent. The colt breezed his furlong in 10 3/5 seconds during the under-tack preview. Visions of Clarity is also the dam of Irish Group 1-winning juvenile Pathfork, multiple stakes winner Tacticus, and the multiple stakes producer Lotus Sutra. Visions of Clarity is out of Group 1-placed Imperfect Circle, making her a half-sister to Irish 2000 Guineas and Breeders' Cup Mile winner Spinning World, who was also a Group 1 winner in France. Group 1 winner Chimes of Freedom, the dam of Eclipse Award champion Aldebaran, appears on the catalog page as does Grade 1 winner Denon.
