Record $1.2M lot at OBS
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Despite concerns over America's current economic slump and movement toward war with Iraq, the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's select juvenile sale Tuesday at Miami's Calder Race Course set a new company record of $1.2 million and achieved one of its highest averages ever, although down from 2002's record average.
A Montbrook colt bought by Demi O'Byrne set the new high mark for OBS, whose previous record was the $1,050,000 that Warners brought at the company's March 2-year-old sale at Ocala two years ago. The previous record for the Calder auction was $900,000 for Max's Buddy, who sold in 2001. The $1.2 million lot helped lift the one-day auction to an average price of $108,829, third highest for the sale. The average was down five percent from last year's record average of $114,395.
Overall, the 2003 auction sold 117 head for a total of $12,733,000, down 2 percent from last year, when 114 juveniles sold for $13,041,000. The median price slipped 17 percent, from last year's $90,000 to $75,000. Buy-backs, meanwhile, fell from 35 percent last year to 30 percent this season.
The new sale record came when O'Byrne, bidding over the phone through trainer Todd Pletcher, bought the last horse through the ring. That was a $1.2 million Montbrook colt offered by Mike O'Farrell's Ocala Stud Farms. A dark bay or brown colt, he is out of Cut Class Leanne, a Cutlass mare with racetrack earnings of $108,385. The colt had breezed a quarter-mile in 11 seconds at the first under-tack show on Jan. 27, then galloped at the second presentation on Feb. 2. He hails from the family of a Canadian Horse of the Year, Fanfreluche.
Mike Gill led the day's buyers with 32 purchases totaling $2,904,000.
