Reasoned Analysis caps rare day of longshots for Brown in Bay Shore

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – When it came to trainer Chad Brown, the bettors got it wrong all day long Saturday at Aqueduct.
After sending out Shidabhuti to upset the Grade 3 Distaff at 9-1 and 19-1 Regulatory Risky to finish second in the Grade 3 Gazelle, Brown capped off his big day with the 15-1 outsider Reasoned Analysis. Finishing full of run down the center of the track, Reasoned Analysis captured the $150,000 Bay Shore by 3 1/4 lengths with his stablemate Proprietary Trade, the public’s choice at 2-1, finishing a tiring seventh in the 3-year-old fixture.
Reasoned Analysis, a son of Practical Joke, entered the Bay Shore off a one-mile maiden win for which he received a modest 73 Beyer Speed Figure. And Brown admitted that the lightly raced colt was not originally under consideration for the race.

Reasoned Analysis dropped a dozen lengths behind the early leaders during the opening half-mile of the seven-furlong Bay Shore, and still appeared to have too much left to do after Maximum Meridius opened a seemingly commanding advantage at midstretch. Reasoned Analysis found another gear nearing the furlong marker, readily over-taking and drawing away from Maximum Meridius, who was easily second best, checking home another 2 1/4 lengths in front of third-place finisher Eliminate.
Owned by Klaravich Stables and ridden to victory by Eric Cancel, who was also aboard for his maiden win, Reasoned Analysis completed the distance over a fast track in 1:24.35 and returned $33.00.
“The horse ran super,” said Brown, by phone from Keeneland on Saturday. “It was a great effort by my whole team. My assistant, Dan Stupp, deserves a lot of the credit. He told me how well this horse was training and as a result, he was sort of a last minute entry. When it looked like there was going to be plenty of pace in the race, we threw him in there to compliment the other one [Proprietory Trade]. Eric was patient and timed it just right to start his run. He’s two for two with us on this horse and is riding really well.”
Brown, who noted that Proprietary Risk never looked comfortable after failing to make the lead as he had in his well-graded maiden win four weeks earlier, also gave Cancel credit for suggesting he try Reasoned Analysis at seven furlongs despite winning his maiden race going a mile.
“Eric said after the last race that, to be honest, Reasoned Analysis was at the end of his rope going a mile and not to be afraid to cut him back a little bit,” said Brown. “That he thought he’d feel a little better under him at a shorter distance.”
Brown also explained some of the reasoning behind why he believed his horses, especially lightly raced 3-year-olds like Reasoned Analysis and Regulatory Risk, might have been over-looked by the wagering public on Saturday.
“It’s the time of year when lightly raced 3-year-olds start to step up, while other ones go the other way,” Brown said. “That’s what creates big prices like this on days like this.”
