Real Doozie benefits from return to statebred company

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla – A return to statebred company could be just what it takes to get Real Doozie back on the winning track in Sunday’s $51,000 allowance feature at Gulfstream Park. Real Doozie is one of a dozen Florida-bred fillies and mares entered to go a mile on the turf, two of whom have been designated for the main-track only. Post time for the 10-race program is 12:50 p.m.
Real Doozie has been idle since finishing fifth, beaten three lengths, when facing open $25,000 starter-allowance opposition on April 10 while equipped with blinkers for the first time by trainer Peter Walder. The blinkers will come off on Sunday when Real Doozie returns to the same level at which she finished a game second on March 11, missing by a half-length to Hera after doing all the dirty work, contesting an honest pace before succumbing grudgingly near the end. Hera sat a perfect pace-stalking trip just off the embattled leaders.

Despite the equipment change, Real Doozie is expected to control the pace from the outset after breaking from the rail in the one-mile chute with Marcos Meneses aboard.
Passion Plus, Baseline Drive, and Livin At the Beach renew acquaintances after having finished one-two-three going a mile and one-sixteenth under similar allowance conditions on May 16. The race featured a dawdling pace scenario that certainly had a major impact on the outcome.
Passion Plus proved a prompt favorite that day, stalking the snail-like pace set by Livin At the Beach and gaining command in early stretch before withstanding a belated try by Baseline Drive. The victory was the second in the last four starts and eighth of Passion Plus’ career. She has won twice since being claimed by trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. for $16,000 out of her 2020 finale.
Baseline Drive also continues to hold her form extremely well and was a hard-luck loser May 16 making her first start since she was transferred to trainer Jose D’Angelo’s barn after her former trainer, Chad Brown, shipped north for the summer. Baseline Drive ran a career best Beyer of 76 in defeat. She will have to overcome the outside post in Sunday’s rematch.

Livin At the Beach was the surprise leader May 16, having rallied from off the pace to win her nonwinners-of two-condition against mid-level claimers four weeks earlier.
Real Doozie’s stablemate Time to Two Step and Raspberry Ballet are the main-track-only entrants.
◗ The racing office will release invitation lists for the Grade 2 Princess Rooney and Grade 3 Smile Sprint on Sunday. The races highlight the Summit of Speed program on July 3. The seven-furlong Princess Rooney for fillies and mares, with a purse elevated to $350,000 in 2020, remains the only Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In event on the local schedule. The $200,000 Smile for 3-year-olds and up will be decided at six furlongs.
