Razorback early 2016 goal for Shotgun Kowboy

Oklahoma Derby winner Shotgun Kowboy is back home at Remington Park after a seventh-place finish in last week’s Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs, and he will target a March return to the races, trainer C.R. Trout said. The goal is a start in the Grade 3, $300,000 Razorback Handicap on March 19 at Oaklawn.
“We’re just going to rest him for a while then get ready for the March race in Hot Springs, the Razorback,” said Trout.
Shotgun Kowboy had won three straight races heading into the Grade 1 Clark on Nov. 27. He pushed the pace in the Clark and earned one of his best Beyer Speed Figures, a 95.
“He ran really good at Churchill,” said Trout.
“We got beat six lengths and that’s not bad for a 3-year-old against older horses in my book.”
Trout said that following the close of the Remington meet Dec. 13 he will send Shotgun Kowboy to the Evangeline Downs Training Center near Lafayette, La. There, the horse will be in the care of trainer Bret Calhoun, said Trout, who also bred and owns Shotgun Kowboy.
One of Trout’s other stakes winners during the Remington meet, Bring It On Dude, is turned out and will be back next year at 3.
