DEL MAR, Calif. - Lil Yachty, the famous rapper, was in the first hour of his first visit to Del Mar on Saturday when he was bound for the winner’s circle. The gelding Listenupshance, part of Lil Yachty’s Run Fast Racing stable, had rallied between rivals in the final furlong to post a 17-1 upset in an allowance race at five furlongs on turf in the day’s opening race. “We got a little lucky,” Lil Yachty said an hour later. “It’s good to be here.” It’s safe to say the moment has clinched Lil Yachty’s status as a Del Mar, and racing, fan. “This is my very first time,” he said. “It’s the beginning. I need to come back. I need to come back and come back and come back.”  :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Lil Yachty, 27, is part owner of Run Fast Racing with fellow rappers Lil Wayne and Rauw Alejandro. The stable was organized by talent agent Adam Kluger, who said the group has 10 horses with the intent of growing to approximately 25 horses. “We’re rocking,” Kluger said. “We’re going to scale up. “We’ll add more people.” Kluger said Lil Yachty is an example of someone who sees racing in person and quickly grows attached to the game. “Getting them here is really what does it,” Kluger said. “Being here now, he really gets it.” Doug O’Neill trains Listenupshance, who was bought privately after winning a maiden race for $20,000 claimers at Del Mar on July 24. The Run Fast team had Punto Forty in Saturday’s Grade 3 Best Pal Stakes, and wanted another runner for the program in conjunction with Lil Yachty’s trip to the races, O’Neill said. The second runner turned out to be a longshot winner. “You do that 100 times and it’s not going to happen,” O’Neill said. O’Neill helped to organize the purchase of Listenupshance, who obliged with a win in his turf debut and fifth start. “The horse came to us in good shape,” O’Neill said. O’Neill credits Kluger for developing Run Fast Racing and bringing the musicians into the ownership group. “He represents a lot of rappers and he loves racing,” O’Neill said. Listenupshance is Run Fast’s fourth runner, and third winner, all since late May. Kluger began acquiring horses for the group last year, buying three yearlings at Keeneland in September. Sixhoofsevenhoof, whose name is a play on Lil Wayne’s song “6 Foot 7 Foot”, was the stable’s first winner, in a $12,500 claimer for maidens at Los Alamitos on June 20. Sixhoofsevenhoof was sent to Louisiana Downs after finishing last of nine in an allowance race at Los Alamitos on July 4 and is now trained by Robertino Diodoro. The group claimed Corporal Violette for $30,000 at Santa Anita on May 10, raced him three times without a win and lost him via claim for $25,000 at Del Mar on Aug. 1, the day the 6-year-old mare finished third. Punto Forty, who finished fourth of five in the Best Pal Stakes, was the team’s first stakes runner. Punto Forty, who won a maiden race at Los Alamitos on June 21, will be considered for the Grade 3 Del Mar Juvenile Turf on Sept. 7, O’Neill said. Lil Yachty, whose real name is Miles McCollum, may attend the Sept. 7 race. He has tour dates in New Zealand and Australia beginning later this month through Sept. 5. If the travel connections work, Lil Yachty will be at Del Mar next month. “That was awesome,” he said after Saturday’s win. “I’m telling you, you’re going to see my face again. I like this.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
