Randomized, after Alabama win, targets Breeders' Cup Distaff

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - By virtue of her authoritative victory in Saturday’s Grade 1 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga, Randomized ran herself into contention for a year-end start in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita.
How she gets there is a question yet to be answered. Trainer Chad Brown said Sunday he has several options, including the Grade 1 Spinster at Keeneland or the Grade 2 Beldame at Aqueduct, both 1 1/8-mile races to be run on Oct. 8. Another option is potentially just training her up to the Distaff on Nov. 4.
“I’m not saying that’s my first choice, it’s a choice,” Brown said Sunday afternoon. “That’s an option depending how fast she ran and how she took it. She’s not a big horse, she’s a strong horse, though. She ran so fast.”
Randomized ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.07 and earned a 98 Beyer Speed Figure, among the top figures earned by a 3-year-old filly going two turns this year. Randomized also earned a 97 Beyer for her victory in the Wilton Stakes going a mile here last month.
Brown seemed not too interested in the Grade 1, $1 million Cotillion on Sept. 23 at Parx Racing, as it would mean cutting back to 1 1/16 miles from 1 1/4 miles and potentially running back too quick off a big race.
Brown said he’s not in a hurry to make a decision on where Randomized runs next.
“She ran unbelievable, she ran her eyeballs out and she’s getting some well-deserved rest now, pampering,” said Brown, who trains Randomized for Seth Klarman. “We’re all so proud of her.”
Wet Paint, the Alabama runner-up, is also likely to skip the Cotillion in part because her owners, Godolphin Racing, are already pointing the three-time Grade 1 winner and division leader Pretty Mischievous to that race.
Wet Paint could be considered for the Spinster.
