Ramseys buy $120K topper, business declines at OBS fall mixed opener

Patrick Reed|Oct 14, 2014

Eclipse Award-winning owners and breeders Ken and Sarah Ramsey bought the mare Alexandra’s Grace for $120,000 to lead Tuesday’s leadoff session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. fall mixed sale. The Ocala, Fla., auction posted across-the-board declines compared with the sale opener in 2013.

OBS reported 130 horses sold during Tuesday’s consignor-preferred session, totaling $2,136,400, a 22 percent dip compared with the 2013 opener, when 121 sold for $2,724,500. Tuesday’s average of $16,434 declined 27 percent from $22,517 in 2013, and the $9,250 median slipped 51 percent from $18,000 last year. The buyback rate in the opening session spiked to 34 percent; it was 12 percent at last year’s consignor-preferred session.

Alexandra’s Grace is a 5-year-old Hard Spun mare who sold in foal to Grade 1 winner and classic-placed Bodemeister, now a stallion at WinStar Farm. Alexandra’s Grace won 3 of 9 starts and earned $102,965. She is out of the stakes-winning Storm Cat mare Mycatcandance, who is a full sister to Grade 1 winner Consolidator. Alexandra’s Grace was consigned by Sequel Bloodstock, agent.

The session’s top weanling, a daughter of champion and Ashford Stud sire Lookin At Lucky, was bought for $87,000 by Belle Glos Farm. Woodford Thoroughbreds, agent, consigned the Florida-bred filly. She is out of the winning Elusive Quality mare Elusive Virgin, and is a half-sister to recent Arlington Washington-Lassie Stakes winner Quality Rocks.

Kaizen Sales led all consignors by gross during Tuesday’s session, selling 19 horses for $255,100. Pro Flow was the leading buyer by gross, with six purchases totaling $196,000.

The OBS fall mixed sale will conclude with an open session on Wednesday followed by a horses of racing age session in the afternoon. The open session begins at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.
