Rampellini: Oaklawn horses to watch for week of March 26
C J’S AWESOME
Trainer: Ken McPeek
Last race: March 18, 8th
Finish: 2nd by 1 3/4
Beyer: 93
He was cutting back from 1 1/8 miles to a mile and did well to track the pace in a race wired by Grade 3 winner Den’s Legacy. C J’s Awesome is a good-looking son of Awesome Again who established his class last year when fourth in a pair of Grade 2 races at Parx and Indiana Grand.
IRISH YOU WELL
Trainer: Wayne Catalano
Last race: March 18, 8th
Finish: 3rd by 4 3/4
Beyer: 87
He made his second start since July in a conditioned allowance at a mile and hooked a wire-to-wire winner in a race that ended at the sixteenth pole. Catalano said he’s the type of horse best suited to racing over a real route of ground, and with a pair of comeback races under his belt, he will be looking for longer races for the horse.
CHIDE
Trainer: Al Stall Jr.
Last race: March 18, 5th
Finish: 1st by 1 1/4
Beyer: 71
She did not get the break in a maiden special weight sprint and hit traffic before shaking loose for a clear win over an experienced and well-bred field of 3-year-old fillies. She’s by Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Blame and from the Grade 2-winning A.P. Indy mare Yell, and in time, she might have a future around two turns.
PUNKIN’S PRIDE
Trainer: Phil Sims
Last race: March 19, 6th
Finish: 5th by 3 1/2
Beyer: 48
She was making her two-turn debut in a $25,000 maiden-claiming race and did not get a clear run through the lane after stalking the pace over a laboring kind of track. She gets good pedigree support for route distances, in particular from the bottom side of her family.
