Rampellini: Oaklawn Horses to Watch for Jan. 26
SPRING INCLUDED
Trainer: Steve Hobby
Last race: Jan. 24, 8th
Finish: 2nd by 1/2
Beyer: 79
She was hooked for much of the $100,000 American Beauty and remained determined to the late stages, only to get caught on the wire by the Grade 3 winner Sugar Shock. The start was Spring Included’s first since November. She also has had success around two turns and on turf.
BOOTSY’S GIRL
Trainer: Kellyn Gorder
Last race: Jan. 24, 7th
Finish: 1st by 9 3/4
Beyer: 72
She pulled away from a nice maiden field over 1 1/16 miles, and the 3-year-old filly now could get a shot at stakes competition, Gorder said, with the Grade 3 Honeybee at Oaklawn an option. Gorder noted Bootsy’s Girl ran in a notable maiden race last fall at Churchill, with the winner and runner-up from it since finishing one-two in Grade 2 Forward Gal at Gulfstream.
OCEANWAVE
Trainer: Wayne Catalano
Last race: Jan. 22, 7th
Finish: 1st by 3 3/4
Beyer: 69
She overcame a difficult trip to beat winners in her first attempt in an allowance sprint. She was bumped around at the start and had one horse beat early. Oceanwave then came six wide into the stretch, overtook the leaders, and pulled clear. Catalano said she is the sort of filly who could develop into a stakes starter this meet at Oaklawn.
GLIDING ON AIR
Trainer: Allen Milligan
Last Race: Jan. 25, 9th
Finish: 5th by 8 3/4
Beyer: 37
She met older rivals for the first time in a maiden-claiming sprint, and for a good portion of the race, the 3-year-old filly went hoof to hoof with a front-running 4-year-old winner. Gliding On Air is a half-sister to Texas Air, a solid miler and stakes winner in his native Texas.
