Rampellini: Oaklawn Horses to Watch for Jan. 25
Elijah
Trainer: Lynn Chleborad
Last Race: Jan. 17, 2nd
Finish: 7th by 10 3/4
Beyer: 63
He has done his best work on the front end, but stumbled at the start of claiming route and trailed in the mud last time in a race that looks like a toss-out. He was favored, too, over a competitive kind of field, and also was claimed.
Dial Me
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Last Race: Jan. 20, 8th
Finish: 3rd by 4
Beyer: 67
She set the pace over a laboring kind of track before yielding in the later stages to a promising, well-bred winner in Torrent. As for Dial Me, it was her first start at two turns and the first time she had raced on a wet track.
Country Candy
Trainer: J.R. Caldwell
Last Race: Jan. 21, 8th
Finish: 6th by 9 1/2
Beyer: 48
She found herself in what can be a demanding spot for a horse – battling between rivals. She also was returning from a layoff. It was the first time in her career that the multiple stakes winner has finished worse than third. Country Candy seems like one who could turn up next in a Texas-bred stakes in March at Sam Houston.
