Ramona 'Cap renamed for Mabee

DRF Staff|Jul 09, 2002

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has renamed the Grade 1 Ramona Handicap to honor the late John C. Mabee, one of the track's longtime directors and an enthusiastic supporter of California racing.

The John C. Mabee Ramona Handicap will be run on July 27, for fillies and mares going nine furlongs on the turf. Golden Eagle Farm, which Mabee owned and operated with his wife, Betty, is located in Ramona, approximately 25 miles inland from Del Mar.

Mabee, who served as Del Mar's president and chairman for nearly 25 years before retiring in December, died after having a stroke in April. He was 80.
