Raise Cain to get break after Perryville victory

Raise Cain came out of his game head win over Dr. Venkman in the Perryville Stakes on Saturday in good shape but is scheduled for a short break at trainer Ben Colebrook’s Kentucky farm before gearing back up for a 4-year-old campaign.
Raise Cain got a 96 Beyer Speed Figure for running seven furlongs in 1:23.58. Not only was the Perryville his ninth start of 2023, and not only has Raise Cain been racing steadily since his career debut 13 months ago, the colt went through a June 2-year-old auction in 2022.
“He’s really never had a break since they broke him,” said Colebrook.
Raise Cain failed to meet a $65,000 reserve at the 2-year-old sale and wound up campaigning for owners Andrew Warren and Raina Warren. That’s worked well, as Raise Cain now has earnings of $577,066.
◗ Air of Defiance could be headed for the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes on Nov. 25 at Churchill Downs, trainer Brad Cox said Sunday. A distant sloppy-track second to Fierceness making his career debut at Saratoga, Air of Defiance, a Quality Road colt owned by Gold Square, won a seven-furlong Keeneland maiden race Oct. 18 by six lengths, earning a 93 Beyer.
