Rainbow 6 nears dispersal with jackpot over $4 million

Unless somebody pulls a Dan Borislow this week, one of the most anticipated gambling events in months will take place Saturday at Gulfstream Park when a mandatory dispersal of the Rainbow 6 jackpot is held.

Three days of racing at the south Florida track will be held before then, and no doubt there will be savvy players trying to spoil the fun for everyone else – the way Borislow did nearly two years ago.

Borislow swept the Rainbow 6 pool on May 25, 2014, one day before the pool was scheduled for a massive mandatory payout. Playing a ticket that cost $7,603.20 and using all the horses in five of the six races, Borislow benefitted from a string of longshot winners and cashed for more than $6.6 million, then died unexpectedly eight weeks later.

Into Wednesday, the Rainbow 6 jackpot stands at a whopping $4,003,307. Sunday marked the 49th straight racing day since the most recent sweep occurred Jan. 13.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is dispersed only when there is a single ticket sold with all six winners. Lacking a solo winner, 70 percent of that day’s pool (following takeout) is paid on tickets with the most winners, with the remainder added to the carryover.

If the jackpot remains intact for Saturday, Gulfstream officials are expecting a one-day handle of more than $10 million in the Rainbow 6.

The Rainbow 6 will be conducted on races 6-11 on Wednesday. First post is 12:35 p.m. Eastern, with race 6 set for 3:05 and race 11 for 5:35.

Here is a brief rundown of the Rainbow 6 sequence for Wednesday. Dry conditions are expected.

Race 6: Four of the nine fillies and mares in this $16,000 turf mile last met March 6 in a race won by the 2-1 favorite, 8-year-old Lady’s Lunar Luck, who drew the rail post for this race and could be a single on many tickets.

Race 7: Scarlet Goddess figures to fire fresh from her outside post in her second start following a Michelle Nevin claim. She’ll have to outrun Outzap, a Todd Pletcher trainee making her first start for a claiming tag, and a couple of first-timers from winning barns, Super Story (Danny Vella) and Pillow Case (Dane Kobiskie).

Race 8: Thatcher Street, trained by Ian Wilkes, likely needed his last start and now figures very tough in this never-won-three allowance after having been competitive in stakes company last year. Friendswith K Mill and Western Reserve are the spoilers.

DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 2 Thatcher Street. Trainer Ian Wilkes is 29-1-3-3 with a $0.14 ROI over the past two years in turf routes at Gulfstream Park. Click for more details. – Mike Hogan

DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 5 Western Reserve. Trainer Bill Mott is 79-15-9-11 with a $2.33 ROI over the past two years in turf routes at Gulfstream Park following a layoff of 45 days or more. Click for more details. – Mike Hogan

Race 9: Grand Bambu would be a big favorite – except he’s been away nearly a year, which probably will force fans to spread more liberally. Pachanga Party, Keepin It Zeal, and Rockyshomerun are other logical plays.

Race 10: The last two races of the card drew oversubscribed fields. Winged Fury could be a lukewarm choice here off a nice maiden score for Chad Brown, but serious players likely will insist on using another handful, including the uncoupled Pletcher pair of Castor and Sweet Victory, along with Auntie Joy, Shades of Grey, and Andreya’s Reward.

Race 11: This is a tricky-looking never-won-two $30,000 turf claimer to end the day. There is no clear-cut choice, although bettors on a budget might limit themselves to Veya, Lone Trader, and Battle Red, all of whom look capable.
