Rainbow 6 carryover at $280K as new week begins

Daily handle into the Rainbow 6 averaged nearly $86,000 during the last four-day week at Gulfstream Park, and that number could increase when another four-day week begins Thursday at the south Florida track.

Not only has the Rainbow 6 become increasingly alluring to bettors with its jackpot continuing to build – the carryover stands at $280,007 for the 10-race Thursday card – but Saturday is one of the biggest days of the summer meet: The rich Florida Sire Stakes series is set for Saturday with a first post of 12:35 p.m. Eastern.

Sunday marked the 19th straight day that the 20-cent wager wasn’t swept at Gulfstream. Handle was $105,517, the high for the week. The jackpot is paid only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners.

The Rainbow 6 runs from races 5 through 10 on Thursday, when the new first post is 1 p.m. (Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays); race 5 goes at 3:01.

Here’s a quick rundown of Thursday’s Rainbow 6, which is noticeably lacking in obvious candidates for potential singles:

◗ Race 5: This is a tough bottom-level conditioned claimer that has a handful of logical winners, including – but not necessarily limited to – Prime Time Tommy, Madroos, Manny Blue Boy, Cheech Thunder, and Giannino.

◗ Race 6: Here Comes Da Boom gets leading jockey Tyler Gaffalione and an inside post as perhaps a lukewarm favorite in this maiden-claiming race going two turns on turf. Reynard Fox, Sound Check, and Red Cat look like the top challengers.

◗ Race 7: This figures to be another difficult choice for handicappers, as none of these Florida-bred 2-year-old maiden fillies stands out on paper. Fans could default to Shes Got the Look if for no other reason than she’s trained by Ralph Nicks, whose big year rolls right along.

◗ Race 8: Not to be repetitive, but this is another real puzzler, with more than half of this field of allowance turf sprinters meriting a solid chance. Likely favorites include Missworldvenezuela, Krista’s Persona, Piaf, Princess Fiona, and Sound Defence.

◗ Race 9: My Dear Venezuela has finished second in a couple of stakes this year, including the Grade 3 Old Hat, and that might be enough to convince some fans to single her on their tickets as the filly drops into a statebred hybrid allowance. She gets a call from Emisael Jaramillo, who continues to ride in terrific form.

◗ Race 10: Sticking with the head-scratcher theme, the finale is a real doozy, with no clear-cut choice in a field of turf milers that could max out at 10. El Almirante, Brevard, Honor Earned, and Dunkirk’s Boy are among the core who figures to draw closest consideration.
