Rainbow 6 bettors vying for $766K jackpot
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – After two dark days to freshen up and reload, Gulfstream Park horseplayers will come out firing Wednesday at a Rainbow 6 jackpot that has not been hit in 17 racing days.
A carryover of $766,642 awaits bettors in the Rainbow 6, a 20-cent wager that comprises races 6 through 11. First post is 1 p.m. Eastern, with race 6 scheduled for 3:30.
The last time the Rainbow 6 was emptied was Feb. 12, when a single bettor won $133,874. A national pick six record was established here last May when the jackpot reached $6.6 million.
The jackpot is paid only when there is a single perfect ticket. On days without just one winner, 70 percent of that day’s pool (after takeout) is returned on tickets with the most winners, with 30 percent added to the jackpot.
Not surprisingly, the Wednesday sequence looks very difficult, with all but one of the six races having attracted huge, deep fields. Here is a quick rundown:
◗ Race 6: Mighty Sky and Very Colorful draw on opposite ends of a full gate, with another handful of viable challengers between them, including Milton T, Victory Mast, and Expected Meeting. Start winnowing at your peril.
◗ Race 7: Patricia Farro gives leading jockey Javier Castellano a return call aboard major contender Amber Morning in trying to snap her nightmarish meet-long drought (0 for 70 into this week), but there are plenty of other players in here, including Eire En Pointe, Creative License, and Lady Midnight, not to mention a few longer shots that wouldn’t necessarily stun anybody if they won.
◗ Race 8: First-time starters from a bunch of reputable stables make this maiden special weight sprint a glorified guessing game, with Triskaidekaphobia, Star Dynasty, Diamond Eye, Miss Ella, Invidia, and Belle Ete all likely to draw long looks. Among those that have started, Cut in Stone and Groovy A are plausible enough.
◗ Race 9: Strict Compliance hails from the perpetually hot Chad Brown barn and gets Castellano, but why was she 20-1 in her only prior start? Hmm. That might be enough for a liberal spread here, too, with Charlevoix, Broken Border, and Harass the best to have already raced. And then there’s promising-looking first-timers Sentiero Italia, Palowet, One Tuf Kitty, Mia and Molly, and Robe.
DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 10 Strict Compliance. Trainer Chad Brown is 65-11-13-7 with a $1.00 ROI over the past five years at Gulfstream Park with 3-year-olds and older in turf maiden special weights at 7 1/2 furlongs and longer. Click for more details. – Mike Hogan

◗ Race 10: With just eight horses in the only allowance of the day, this turf sprint includes what surely will be a single for many bettors: City of Vengeance, who ran off and hid for trainer Wesley Ward in his only prior start. He’s no cinch – regression is always possible off a flashy debut like that – but he does figure in the even-money range, which is far lower than any favorite in any other races in the sequence.
◗ Race 11: If your head isn’t already aching from the handicapping grind, this unwieldy finale could put you over the edge. Fancy Henry and Collinito, both well-drawn, are lukewarm favorites on the morning line, but another half-dozen or more are not major reaches. If anyone sweeps this jackpot, it will have come well-earned.
DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 6 Palowet. Trainer Mark Casse is 14-2-0-1 with a $4.27 ROI over the past five years at Gulfstream Park debuting 3-year-olds and older in turf maiden special weights at 7 1/2 furlongs and longer. Click for more details. – Mike Hogan
DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 4 Sentiero Italia. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin is 21-1-0-1 with a $0.35 ROI over the past five years debuting 3-year-olds and older in turf maiden special weights at 7 1/2 furlongs and longer. Click for more details. – Mike Hogan
DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 2 Harass. Trainer Ian Wilkes is 35-2-3-6 with a $0.42 ROI over the past five years adding blinkers in turf races. Click for more details. – Mike Hogan
