Raider sits off pace battle in Redtail Landing Handicap
Raider took advantage of a hotly contested pace to win the $50,000 Redtail Landing Handicap at Century Mile on Sunday. She paid $5.60 for her half-length victory over longshot Smart Fix in the seven-furlong race for fillies and mares.
The final time over a track rated muddy that had changed from speed favoring to tiring was 1:24.79.
With Prayven Badrie aboard, Raider saved ground from a stalking position while C U At Eau Claire, Ruffenuff, Daz Lin Dawn, and Cry Uncle battled for the early lead. She started to move into serous contention turning for home, opened up a clear lead at the eighth pole and held off the late move from Smart Fix. Daz Lin Dawn, who prompted the pace while going four wide, held on to finish third.
A British Columbia-bred daughter of Stephanotis, Raider races for Curtis Landry and is trained by Greg Tracy.
In the co-feature Stone Carver, $9.50, broke on top and splashed his way to a convincing victory over Moon King in the $50,000 Spangled Jimmy Handicap for 3-year-olds and up.
Stove Carver was 2 1/2 lengths in front of Moon King after a half-mile in 46.34 seconds, and under strong urging from Rigo Sarmiento was never seriously threatened on his way to a 1 3/4-length victory in the seven-furlong race. Moon King finished a length in front of heavily favored Trooper John who may have struggled over a track rated muddy that was clearly favoring speed.
The final time was 1:22.91
Stone Carver is trained by Tim Rycroft. The Kentucky-bred 4-year-old by Birdstone is owned by Riversedge Racing Stables.
