Raider goes last to first in Chariot Chaser Handicap
Raider, trained by Greg Tracy, came from last to win the $51,000 Chariot Chaser Handicap at Northlands Park on Friday night.
She paid $4.40 for her one-length victory over stablemate Suzette.
With Rico Walcott aboard, Raider settled early in the five-horse field while Suzette carved out interior fractions of 23.22 and 46.77 in the six-furlong dash for 3-year-old fillies. She got within striking range at the quarter pole and was in full flight while going three wide around the stretch turn. She was three lengths behind Suzette at the top of the stretch and finished with a flourish to win going away.
Suzette looked like she might be gone when she opened up a clear lead early, but couldn’t hold off her stablemate. In what turned into a two-horse race Suzette finished 6 1/4 lengths in front of I Miss Back When, who came from a stalking position.
The final time was 1:12.36.
Owned by Curtis Landry, Raider was coming off a third-place finish in the $50,000 Ross McLeod at Hastings. In her only other start in Alberta the B.C.-bred daughter of Stephanotis won the $50,000 2-year-old Filly Sales Stakes at Northlands Aug. 12.
The $30,000 winner’s share of the purse brought her earnings to $135,050.
