Rahy’s Attorney, One for Rose, Richard Dos Ramos, John Burness, and Dale Saunders are among the 2026 inductees into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Rahy’s Attorney gained his 15 minutes by upsetting the 2008 Woodbine Mile, a prestigious Grade 1 stakes. He was voted the Sovereign Award as outstanding male grass runner that year and went on to capture the Grade 2 King Edward and Grade 2 Nijinsky while banking $2.1 million for trainer Ian Black. One for Rose was a bargain $40,000 claim at Woodbine by trainer Sid Attard from trainer Josie Carroll, after which she became a three-time Canadian champion. She romped in the Grade 3 Maple Leaf in 2004 after beating males in the Seagram Cup Stakes, for which she earned a 102 Beyer Speed Figure. Dos Ramos was a senior member of the Woodbine jockey colony when he retired in 2013, a career that began in the spring of 1981 at Greenwood. He won the riding titles at the Woodbine and Greenwood autumn meets that year and was the country’s outstanding apprentice twice. In 1992, he rode Benburb to a huge upset over favored A.P. Indy in the Molson Export Million. In 1999, he guided longshot Thornfield to victory in the Grade 1 Canadian International. He recorded 2,159 wins and accumulated $61 million in purse earnings. Burness has been involved in the Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry for more than 50 years and continues to operate his Ontario-based Colebrook Farms, where he currently stands five stallions. He co-owned Grade 1 winner Johnny Bear and also campaigned the millionaire grass specialist Simply in Front, who took the Grade 1 First Lady last fall at Keeneland. Saunders began his training career in the mid-1960s, racking up 2,177 wins and earnings of $17.5 million. Named the E.P. Taylor Award of Merit winner by The Jockey Club of Canada in 2022, Saunders was Alberta’s leading trainer eight times and was named the province’s Horseperson of the Year in 2012. He trained a host of top Alberta runners, including Dark Hours, Shady Remark, Highland Leader, and Fair March. Also making it into the Hall of Fame on the Thoroughbred side are photographer Michael Burns Jr. and Eva Ring in the Legends category. The inductees on the Standardbred side are Dr. Maurice Stewart, Mike Saftic, Doug Arthur, Put On A Show, Majestic Son, Western Dreamer, and William Henry Riddell. The class of 2026 will be inducted Aug. 12 in a ceremony at the Mississauga Convention Center. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
