Raging Torrent, Metropolitan Mile winner, retired with injury to left foreleg

DEL MAR, Calif. - Raging Torrent, one of the leading milers and older horses this year, has been retired after the colt was recently diagnosed with a suspensory injury, according to co-owner Craig Dado.

The injury was detected in the weeks after Raging Torrent won his third consecutive stakes, and the fifth of his 14-race career, in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Mile Handicap at Saratoga on June 7. A 4-year-old by the Into Mischief stallion Maximus Mischief, Raging Torrent won seven races and earned $1,797,400.

Dado said late Saturday afternoon that discussions with stallion farms are underway for the 2026 breeding season.

Raging Torrent was diagnosed with an injury to his left foreleg, Dado said.

“With maybe a year off, he could come back,” Dado said. “We’ll pass on that and retire him.”

Trained by Doug O’Neill, Raging Torrent won his final three starts – the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs at Santa Anita last December, the Grade 2 Godolphin Mile in Dubai on April 5, and the Met Mile. Raging Torrent was seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar last November.

Dado described Raging Torrent’s recent results as “great.”

Dado, through the Great Friends Racing partnership, owned Raging Torrent with Yuesheng Zhang. After the Met Mile, Raging Torrent was rated as a leading contender for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar on Nov. 1.
