Raging Bull tops 23 nominees for Woodbine Mile

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Multiple Grade 1 winner Raging Bull is among the 23 nominees to the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile, which headlines a blockbuster Sept. 18-19 weekend at Woodbine.
Victorious in the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland in April, Raging Bull is among the four nominated to the $1 million turf event by trainer Chad Brown. Brown also nominated Grade 2-winning mare Blowout, multiple stakes winner Flavius, and Value Proposition, who finished third behind Flavius in the Lure Stakes on Aug. 7 at Saratoga.
Trainers Mark Casse and Mike Maker both nominated three horses to the prestigious race.
Casse is looking to run the Grade 2 victors Ride a Comet, Olympic Runner, and March to the Arch, who was a troubled second in last year’s Mile.
Maker nominated four-time Grade 3 winner Field Pass, the profitable $62,500 claim Monarchs Glen, and Grade 2 winner Somelikeithotbrown, who is coming off a heartbreaking loss in the Grade 2 Wise Dan at Churchill Downs.
The Woodbine Mile will be the feature on a Sept. 18 card that also includes the Grade 1 Canadian International and the Grade 2 Canadian.
The Sept. 19 program has two Grade 1, $400,000 turf stakes for 2-year-olds, the Summer and Natalma for fillies. Both are Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In qualifiers, along with the Woodbine Mile. They are the only three races at the meet where Lasix is prohibited.
Casse nominated six to the Summer and five to the Natalma, including unbeaten stakes winner Diabolic. Brown nominated five to the Natalma and one to the Summer. Brad Cox, last year’s Eclipse Award-winning trainer, nominated four to the Natalma.
Casse sends pair in allowance
Casse sends out stakes winner Chart and Broadway Lady in Monday’s featured conditioned allowance for fillies and mares, scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the main turf.
Chart captured the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen going a mile on the local turf when she was in peak form in summer 2020. She was beaten double digits in both of her subsequent starts, including a March 6 optional claimer on the Tapeta at Turfway.
Broadway Lady just missed winning at the second allowance condition in her last start on the inner turf.
Trainer Roger Attfield sends out Lady Speightspeare and Gote Go in the headliner.
Reigning Canadian champion 2-year-old filly Lady Speightspeare is making her belated season debut. She won both of her 2-year-old races, most notably the one-mile Natalma, after which she went to the sidelines with an injury.
Rounding out the field in the fifth race are Nantucket Red, Peace Seeker, Silent Tango, Above All Names, and Cool Shadows.
Post time for the lone Monday card of the meet is 1:10 p.m.
