SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Chapter 2 in the career of the much-ballyhooed Rachel’s Valentina will take place Saturday at Saratoga, where the regally bred 2-year-old filly makes her stakes debut against five others in the Grade 1, $350,000 Spinaway. Rachel’s Valentina, a daughter of champions Bernardini and Rachel Alexandra, won her debut in impressive fashion, rallying wide to a two-length victory going six furlongs Aug. 2. Trainer Todd Pletcher will send out Rachel’s Valentina and Tonasah in the seven-furlong Spinaway. “She trained really well before she ran, and she ran the way she trained,” Pletcher said of Rachel’s Valentina. “I was very happy with her first start, and the added distance will certainly not be a problem. I see this as a step towards two turns, in my eyes.” :: DRF Live: Watch live handicapping analysis of Saturday’s Saratoga card starting at 4 p.m. Eastern Tonasah was an easy wire-to-wire debut winner going five furlongs at Belmont Park before returning to finish second, beaten 1 1/4 lengths by Just Wicked, three weeks later in the Grade 2 Adirondack. Tonasah will race without blinkers for the first time on Saturday. “We’re taking the blinkers off because if we’re going to stretch her out, we need to slow her down a little bit,” said Pletcher. “But her speed is her weapon, so we’re not going to get in a fight with her either.” Tonasah figures to take some early pressure from Constellation, who prompted the pace before drawing away to an easy 4 1/2-length victory in her debut, which came going 5 1/2 furlongs here Aug. 9. A contested pace should help Rachel’s Valentina and Tap to It. A late-running Tapit filly, Tap to It overcame a slow start and traffic to register a two-length win debuting at six furlongs, and she should benefit from the education she received that day. Trainer Ralph Nicks feels Tap to It will get better the farther she goes. “This should be a step in the right direction distance-wise for her,” said Nicks. “I’m really excited about eventually seeing her go two turns.” Banree joins Tonasah as the only stakes-tested fillies in the lineup, having finished second behind runaway winner Off the Tracks in the Grade 3 Schuylerville on opening day of the meet. Anna Rae, who drew off to an 11 1/2-length debut win while competing under a $65,000 claiming tag Aug. 14, completes the field. :: Bet the Spinaway with DRF Bets and get FREE access to this article and all of DRF Plus, including Saratoga selections, video, and real-time analysis.
