R. Smiser West, breeder, dies

Dr. R. Smiser West, owner of Waterford Farm and co-breeder of champions Chilukki and De La Rose, died in Lexington, Ky., on Dec. 20.

West was in his mid-90's and had been in Lexington's Samaritan Hospital for about a week after falling.

While in high school, West met Mackenzie Miller, now a retired Hall of Fame trainer, beginning a long and successful association. The pair, together with their wives, bred 1999 champion juvenile filly Chilukki and 1981 champion grass mare De La Rose. They also bred multiple Grade 1 winner Lite Light, Grade 1 winner Tweedside, and Grade 2 winner Hero's Tribute.

Smiser West is survived by his wife, Kathryn; two sons, Robert Jr. and Henry; and five grandchildren.
