OLDSMAR, Fla. – R Free Roll, who set the pace into the final furlong of the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl Stakes at Gulfstream in her last outing, will be out to prove she’s the fastest of several very quick rivals set to contest Saturday’s $50,000 Minaret Stakes. The six-furlong Minaret drew a full field of 14, and no fewer than six of the entrants in the headliner are horses with a strong early turn of foot. But the quickest of the group could be R Free Roll, who will be making her 2015 debut Saturday. The Kirk Ziadie trainee has ranked as one of the top distaff sprinters in south Florida over the past two seasons and proved her class last summer when she splashed home a 1 1/4-length winner of the Grade 2 Honorable Miss at Saratoga. That win was one of three victories in 2014 for R Free Roll, who amassed earnings of $258,314 last season. Most recently, R Free Roll was installed as the 4-5 choice in a field of six in the Sugar Swirl and led the field into the final furlong of that sprint before weakening to be fourth, beaten just 1 3/4 lengths. R Free Roll has posted a series of black-letter works in south Florida leading up to the Minaret and gets the meet’s leading rider, Antonio Gallardo, in the irons. Nesso, who was very impressive in her first start since September last time out, is one of several who are expected to be pressing the issue from the start in the Minaret. A winner of 2 of 3 lifetime starts over the Tampa Bay Downs main track, Nesso captured the Gasparilla Stakes here last season. With a number of front-running types in the feature, and considering that the racing surface has not been as speed-favoring as it was earlier in the meet, a stalker or late-closing type might be the way for bettors to go in the Minaret. One of those types is Galiana. A winner of 11 of 22 lifetime starts, Galiana has good early speed but has shown the ability to prompt the leaders, then rally through the lane in several of her victories. KEY CONTENDERS Galiana (Last 3 Beyers: 75-74-76) ◗ She should be stalking inside and rarely runs a poor one. Classy Coco (Last 3 Beyers: 73-79-80) ◗ She makes her first start for the Graham Motion barn and has a running style that fits in this speed-laden field. She also should be a generous price. R Free Roll (Last 3 Beyers: 92-81-102) ◗ She is probably the quickest of several quick ones in here. If the track comes up speed-favoring Saturday, her chances improve even more.
