R Free Roll darts to big win in U Can Do It Handicap
R Free Roll was in control of the $65,000 U Can Do It Handicap throughout Saturday at Calder Race Course, where she darted to a 3 3/4-length win over a fast-closing Centrique. The race was one of four sprint stakes on the card, all traditional preps for the Summit of Speed. But the status of that program is uncertain this year. Due to dates negotiations between Calder and Gulfstream Park, Calder is not expected to race in July.
R Free Roll ($2.80), a candidate for the Grade 1 Princess Rooney Handicap, the most prestigious race during the Summit of Speed, was in command from the start Saturday. She was three lengths clear of the field through an opening quarter in 21.70 seconds and increased her advantage through a half-mile in 44.47. R Free Roll cruised in the stretch while covering six furlongs on a fast track in 1:10.
Edgard Zayas was aboard, the first of three stakes wins on the card for the meet’s leading rider. He rode R Free Roll for trainer Kirk Ziadie, one of two stakes winners on the afternoon for the jockey-trainer team. They also accounted for the $65,000 Ponche Handicap with Mr. Baker. Zayas registered his other stakes win Saturday in the $65,000 Unbridled for 3-year-olds when Bolita Boyz outgamed Rasta Rant.
R Free Roll races for Averill Racing and Silver Oaks Stable. She was winning for the sixth time from 16 career starts Saturday, and the $39,494 she earned pushed her career bankroll to $375,854. R Free Roll is a 4-year-old by Rockport Harbor, and she was bred in Florida by Richard Averill.
Mr. Baker ($7) won his third straight race in the Ponche Handicap, a six-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up that traditionally has produced starters for the Grade 2 Smile. Mr. Baker tracked the pace in third as Risk Factor took the field through an opening quarter in 21.27 seconds. Mr. Baker advanced three wide on the turn, was in the lead through a half-mile in 44.07 seconds, and went on to cover the distance in 1:10.41. He won by 2 1/4 lengths over Dad’z Laugh, and he races for Acclaimed Stable.
In the $65,000 Leave Me Alone Stakes, Florida Sun ($19.20) rallied from off the pace for a 1 1/4-length win over Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies alum Scandalous Act in the six-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies. Florida Sun was cutting back from two turns and moving turf to dirt for the race, one start after running third in the $90,000 Honey Ryder at Gulfstream. She covered six furlongs in 1:12. Kevin Krigger was aboard for All American Horses and trainer Mario Morales.
Bolitz Boyz ($7.40) covered the six furlongs in the Unbridled Stakes in 1:11.23. William White trains the winner for GZS Stable.
