With several New York shippers bowing out of the $100,000 Rehoboth Stakes at Delaware Park on Saturday, R Disaster, a 4-year-old filly trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., will likely become an overwhelming presence in a shorter field. “She’s in good form,” Joseph said. “Has worked well since [the Grade 3 Vagrancy]. Goes there the deserving favorite.” R Disaster made her last two starts in Grade 3 stakes, losing by a neck in both races. In April, she shipped from Florida to Aqueduct and arguably ran the best race of her life in the Vagrancy, dueling white-hot sprinter and stablemate Haulin Ice around the track in a game defeat. A pair of 5-year-old mares, Socially Selective and St. Benedicts Prep, were supposed to follow R Disaster from the Vagrancy to the Rehoboth, but neither New York rival will make the trip for the six-furlong sprint. Trainer Linda Rice intends to run St. Benedicts Prep at Saratoga in June instead. Bill Mott said that he planned to ship Socially Selective alongside Kay Army, a turf runner entered in the $200,000 Cape Henlopen. That race has been postponed due to inclement weather. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Sunday Girl is not scratched yet, but David Duggan was uncertain about making the trip on Thursday. A six-time winner in eight starts, the 4-year-old filly won the $125,000 Correction in March, and Duggan was looking for a soft spot to bring her back off a layoff. Between the likely track conditions and even likelier favorite, the Rehoboth may not end up being the right spot. In eight career starts, R Disaster has never finished worse than second. With at least two key rivals out, her path to a stakes triumph becomes even more straightforward. R Disaster isn’t the only runner who could benefit from a few scratches. Trainer Lindsay Schultz was concerned about the strength of the field as 4-year-old filly Reagan’s Flame returns from a six-month layoff. She will cut back to a sprint distance for the second stakes start of her career. Mike Moore, trainer of Alani, said that he will “likely” still make the trip from Parx Racing. The 4-year-old filly has been steadily improving and won her last two allowance starts by 9 3/4 combined lengths. Cape Henlopen rescheduled The $200,000 Cape Henlopen Stakes has been postponed from Saturday and added to the stakes undercard on Saturday, June 14. In a press release, the track cited “significant rainfall in the region this weekend and the forecasted precipitation” as reasons to postpone the turf event. The $10,000-guaranteed middle pick five wager on Saturday has been canceled. A giveaway tied to the Saturday card will continue as scheduled. Delaware will reopen nominations for the Cape Henlopen until June 4. The new field for the 1 1/2-mile race will be drawn June 10. Delaware is the second track in the Mid-Atlantic region to postpone turf stakes races this week due to expected rainfall. Penn National canceled all four stakes on its Friday card and will now run those races June 20. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
