Jockey Antonio Gallardo swept both $100,000 stakes for Florida-breds Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs when R Adios Jersey won the City of Ocala as an odds-on favorite and Octane pulled a mild upset in the Marion County. The City of Ocala and Marion County, both for 3-year-olds and upward at seven furlongs, highlighted a 10-race card held amid ideal weather conditions at Tampa in Oldsmar, Fla. Both races are funded by the Florida Sire Stakes (FSS) arm of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association. City of Ocala R Adios Jersey repeated as the winner of the City of Ocala under confident handling from Gallardo, finishing in 1:23.59 over a fast track. She returned $3.60 when making her first start in more than six months. :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Join now! Restofthestory tried to threaten with a sustained rail bid for much of the stretch run before coming up 1 3/4 lengths shy, while another three-quarters of a length ahead of Sassy Beast in a field of six fillies and mares. R Adios Jersey, trained by local kingpin Gerald Bennett, is owned in partnership by Averill Racing and retired baseball star Jayson Werth. Rich Averill of Averill Racing said the City of Ocala was designed as a springboard to a busier 2023 campaign after the 4-year-old daughter of Adios Charlie missed much of 2022 because of a mid-year illness. “Hopefully this sets us up for a big year at 5,” Averill said. R Adios Jersey now has won six of nine starts. She won the 2021 City of Ocala by 11 lengths as a 1-5 favorite. Marion County Octane ($12.60) was sent to the lead from his inside post before finally getting the best of heavily favored Willy Boi in the Marion County, the colt-and-gelding counterpart to the City of Ocala. Octane, a 3-year-old Arindel homebred, is based on the Atlantic Coast at the Palm Meadows training center with Carlos David. After winning two of three legs in the FSS series for 2-year-olds last year at Gulfstream Park, the Brethren gelding had won just once in four prior starts this year while stair-stepping his way toward peak form again. He finished in 1:23. Willy Boi, the 1-2 favorite in a field of seven, had every chance to push past Octane but just couldn’t do so. He was a half-length behind the winner while saving the place by a head from a second Arindel homebred, Gatsby, with the others farther back. Gallardo, a 35-year-old native of Cadiz, Spain, was aboard Octane. Gallardo is a five-time leading rider at Tampa, with his first title coming at the 2013-14 meet. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
