Quirky meets Significant Heart in Charger Bar Handicap
Quirky and Significant Heart, winners of major stakes in the final months of 2014, are leading contenders in Sunday’s $100,000 Charger Bar Handicap for Quarter Horse fillies and mares at Los Alamitos.
Quirky won the Southern California Derby over 400 yards Dec. 21, her second stakes win of 2014. Trained by James Glenn Jr. for Los Alamitos track owner Ed Allred, Quirky, 4, faces older fillies and mares for the first time in the Charger Bar.
Significant Heart won three stakes for fillies and mares in 2014 – the Miss Princess Handicap in May, the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Handicap in September, and the Las Damas Handicap in November. She was considered for the $60,000 Christmas Handicap on Dec. 13 but held out of the race in favor of the Charger Bar.
Significant Heart, 5, races for Abagail Kawananakoa and is trained by Paul Jones.
The field of 10 includes two other stakes winners from December – the Allred-owned Sweet Tr, who won the Paul Ford Handicap over 550 yards on Dec. 12, and The Streakin Clean, who won the Hawkish Handicap over 100 yards on Dec. 7. The Streakin Clean was third in the Las Damas Handicap in November.
