Quickick settles in at Saratoga after Iowa Oaks win

Barbara D. Livingston Quickick surpassed $500,000 in earnings in the Iowa Oaks.

Quickick has arrived in New York following her victory in last weekend’s Iowa Oaks. She was a dramatic winner of the Prairie Meadows staple, shuttling through the lane to get up by a nose.

“That was a nice, quick kick at the end there,” trainer Tom Amoss said.

It was the first stakes win for Quickick, who races for the Greenwell Thoroughbreds operation of Greg Tramontin. Last year, she ran third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

“She’s here at Saratoga now, and the plan is for Greg and I to sit down and talk about her next start,” Amoss said Thursday. “She came back well.”

Quickick, who earlier this year was seventh in the Kentucky Oaks, surpassed $500,000 in earnings in the Iowa Oaks. She trailed early under Brian Hernandez Jr., then unleashed a powerful move on the final turn of the 1 1/16-mile race run on a track rated good.

“We’ve been playing with the idea that she needs to be outside of horses when she makes her run,” Amoss said. “When Umberto [Rispoli] rode her in the Kentucky Oaks, despite her finish, he said, ‘Her last sixteenth of a mile, when I got her outside of horses, she took off.’ So, with that in mind, that was our game plan in this race. Down on the inside, she fell all the way back to last before Brian could get her outside and she made a super move those last three-eighths of a mile in the race.”

Quickick was a maiden winner at Saratoga last September. The daughter of McKinzie is the fourth stakes winner produced by her Grade 3-winning dam, Graeme Six, who was trained by Amoss.
