OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Trainer Linda Rice had an internal debate whether to run Mommasgottarun in last Sunday’s $97,000 Top Flight Stakes or Friday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Distaff Handicap at Aqueduct. Unable to decide, Rice ran the 4-year-old filly in both. Five days after she finished last in the Top Flight, Mommasgottarun rallied four wide on the turn under Eric Cancel, took over at the three-sixteenths pole and edged clear for a 1 1/2-length victory in the Distaff. Funny How, who came in with a five-race winning streak, rallied to be second, five lengths clear of 64-1 shot Hydra. Rossa Veloce, the 6-5 favorite, stumbled badly at the start and finished fourth. She was followed in the order of finish by Gerrymander, Meraviglioso and Easy to Bless. Pass the Champagne was scratched. Rice had entered Mommasgottarun in the seven-furlong Distaff just hours before Mommasgottarun competed in the Top Flight, run at 1 1/8 miles. Rice didn’t like the front-running trip Mommasgottarun got in the Top Flight, where she finished fifth, 5 1/2 lengths behind winner Falconet. :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic.  Rice gave the filly one day off before taking her back to the track Tuesday. Rice trained Mommasgottarun each day, including Friday, only deciding to run in late morning. “She seemed fresh, came off the track well, bouncing,” she said. “You know it’s not an easy thing to do. You have to feel really good about it. Before I left the barn, I said, ‘Let me see her again.’ She [jogged] down the road pretty good, looked happy. The look in her eye was good enough for me. I said, ‘Let’s do it.’ ” Rice and Cancel liked the outside draw for Mommasgottarun, whom Rice views as more effective coming from off the pace. In the Distaff, Gerrymander, from the rail, and Hydra from outside contested the early pace and were soon joined by Rossa Veloce, who rushed up after stumbling badly at the break. Mommasgottarun bobbled two strides away from the gate and seemed eager, but Cancel did a good job of keeping her off the pace. Cancel launched his bid entering the far turn, and Mommasgottarun joined the front trio at the quarter pole before taking command inside the three-sixteenths pole. Mommasgottarun, a daughter of Maclean’s Music owned by Ronald Stewart, covered the seven furlongs in 1:25.29 and returned $16 as the fourth betting choice. “I told Eric in the paddock we have a nice outside post,” said Rice, who claimed this filly for $50,000 on Dec. 31. “She’s gonna break, she has natural speed away from the gate. Just don’t rush this filly. This filly sprinted a lot. They sent her to the lead all the time and she could only beat claiming horses that way, so just sit against her and just don’t rush her.” Cancel said the outside draw and the turnback in distance were keys to victory. “This is the right distance today and she was ready to roll,” he said. Though Funny How had her five-race winning streak snapped, trainer Ray Handal was content with the performance and the decision by jockey Katie Davis to save ground instead of trying to go wide around Mommasgottarun on the turn. “It maybe got her going a little late, but I usually stick with the decision to save ground,” Handal said. “She came with a run, she was just second best.” Rice said she would likely look to run Mommasgottarun back in the Grade 2, $200,000 Ruffian on May 6 at Belmont Park. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
